INTERCONNECTION
Energy Storage Systems require high voltage, high power connection solutions
Inelco Hunter, an Amphenol partner, examines the challenges E
nergy Storage Systems (ESS) are vital for storing surplus energy generated from various sources at times of low demand or high production. ESS applications are especially important given the natural peaks and troughs of renewable energy generation. In this article, we consider how interconnect products play a part. ESS applications require higher amperage and voltage metrics, cutting- edge environmental sealing standards and industry-leading durability. These requirements are crucial in meeting the escalating demands of the energy sector. Among Amphenol Industrial’s most versatile product line offerings is the SurLok Plus range. These connectors play a crucial role in enhancing the integration and the adaptation of Solid State Batteries (SSBs). As the name suggests, SSBs use a solid electrolyte material instead of the traditional gel electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries. As this technology has evolved, materials like ceramics or polymers became prime candidates for solid-state electrolyte production, based on their atomic composition. This innovation translates into faster charging times, extended lifespan, superior energy density, safer and more compact designs, and expanded environmental applications.
SSBs are poised to revolutionise energy storage capabilities, especially with substantial lifestyle augmentation in recent years, and particularly observable over the last decade. As structures like container homes, tree homes, mobile homes and other alternative residential structures become more dominant, the energy infrastructure supporting these innovations must evolve at an equal or greater rate.
As such, meeting these unprecedented demands for energy autonomy goes far existing municipal requirements. Historically, it was almost unfathomable to conceive a 1,500-volt application; however, it is
considered standard today and will soon be outdated.
By combining these advancements, once far-fetched dreams are now being st

as we know it; minimising the trade-offs between modern amenities, offering sustainable independence from the electrical grid and choosing a non-traditional home.
Industrial applications
The industrial applications of the SurLok Plus special-purpose tools and subsequently reduce maintenance and repair times. Coupled with numerous termination options, the viability of the SurLok Plus to handle the environmental and operational challenges associated with ESS and their countless are up to 500A current rating range and 1500VDC operating voltage range.
Additional high voltage, high power connector solutions
Amphenol offers many other high voltage, high power connectors, available from high-performance and increased safety are required in HEV applications, the Amphenol range of EXCEL | MATE connectors meet the challenge. The HVSL Series is designed for various Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) applications, including power and signal interconnect solutions. Many different versions are available, with a performance
Another such solution is the ePower series, which utilises EMI shielding technologies and is aimed at ruggedised harsh environments needing high voltage and high power. With two or three contacts per connector, up to 700 amps is possible.
