IGUS MARKS 60TH ANNIVERSARY WITH WORLD TOUR ON IGUS:BIKE, RAISING AWARENESS OF THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY OF PLASTICS

production near waste plants worldwide, closing the plastic recycling loop. “The igus:bike is a permanent

development project. When you see an igus:bike on the road, you know that something completely new is being explored and with that comes constant changes and improvements,” explained Matthew Aldridge, managing director of igus in the UK. Plastic waste from landfills all over

the world could become the raw material for the igus:bike in the future. igus manufactures the individual components using rotational and injection moulding – from the frame to the bearings and drive crank. Since the start of development,

October marked the 60th birthday of igus and to celebrate the occasion the igus:bike will travel the world for a whole year, raising awareness on the ‘circular economy of plastics’. The igus:bike is manufactured using

recycled ocean plastic waste, and the company’s ultimate goal is to establish local

the material researchers have succeeded in gradually increasing the percentage of recycled plastic. This makes it possible to process discarded fishing nets, shampoo bottles and other plastic waste into recycled pellets for rotomoulding machines, turning these into a valuable resource.

FREE ONLINE MACHINE SAFETY WEBINARS

Euchner is hosting a series of free online webinars to raise awareness of machinery safety and encourage regulatory compliance During the sessions, experts from Euchner will give an easy-to-understand insight into everything

from compliance with legislation to the safe operation of machines and plants. The sessions, which are free of charge, will run fortnightly and last around 30 minutes. The

webinars offer an overview of a particular topic with the chance to ask questions to leading experts. Webinar topics include the new features of EN ISO 13849-1 and EN ISO 14119 – two of the main

standards that guide machinery safety and guard locking. Meanwhile, future sessions will cover things like risk assessments and safe maintenance, both critical topics. “Machinery safety is critical in

automotive plants, packaging facilities and other industrial environments but its importance is often overlooked,” explains Joe Ardley, machinery safety specialist at Euchner. “We decided to launch the webinar series to help bridge this knowledge gap and raise awareness of the different areas that can impact machinery safety and compliance.”

www.euchner.co.uk Over the next year, the plastic bicycle will be

travelling across at least 16 countries – including Germany, Italy, China and the UK. The aim is to show that plastics do not have to end up in incineration or landfill and instead can help shape the transport of tomorrow. As it travels to each igus subsidiary, the bike will visit various customer factories. Once it reaches the UK, which is expected to be summer 2025, the bike is set to travel across the country, sightseeing and highlighting customer applications along the way. With this worldwide tour, igus hopes to make customer stories come alive at every stage. “As a company that has been manufacturing

industrial components from plastic for 60 years now, we are committed to driving the transformation to a sustainable circular economy of plastics. The igus:bike is a significant milestone on this path,” added Aldridge. “As the bike travels with us through the UK, we hope to inspire many companies and customers to get involved.”

ELECTRONICS MANUFACTURING HUB TO OPEN NEXT YEAR

Legrand UK & Ireland is to open a new electronics manufacturing hub in Northumberland next year, bringing 200 jobs to the local area and launching the latest electronics manufacturing centre of excellence for the Legrand Group in Europe. The purpose-built site in Cramlington – which will be home, among other, to Legrand’s CP Electronics lighting controls and Legrand Care brands – will boast a wide range of sustainable features, including solar PV. Pascal Stutz, CEO, Legrand UK & Ireland,

said: “The opening of our new Cramlington facility underscores our confidence in the UK’s manufacturing sector and particularly in the skilled workforce in the North East.” The company is also looking to further develop

its presence in the London area, with plans to also establish a state-of-the-art research and development centre and testing laboratory.

Nexperia has entered into a strategic partnership with KOSTAL, a leading automotive supplier, which will enable it to produce wide bandgap (WBG) devices that more closely match the exacting requirements of automotive applications. Under the terms of this partnership, Nexperia will supply, develop, and manufacture WBG power electronics devices which will be designed-in and validated by Kostal. The collaboration will initially focus on the development of SiC MOSFETs in topside cooled (TSC) QDPAK packaging for onboard chargers (OBC) in electric vehicles (EV). “Nexperia has been a trusted supplier of

silicon components to KOSTAL for many years and is delighted to enter into this strategic partnership that will now extend to wide bandgap devices,” commented Katrin Feurle, senior director and head of SiC Discretes & Modules. “KOSTAL will assist in validating our devices in its charging applications, thereby providing us with the type of invaluable ‘real-world’ data that will allow us to further enhance their performance.” Dr. Georg Mohr, executive VP Purchasing & Supply Chain of the KOSTAL Group, added: “Under this strategic partnership, which reinforces our long-standing customer-supplier relationship, KOSTAL will leverage Nexperia’s

expertise in wide bandgap technology, particularly their SiC MOSFETs, which we believe are among the best in the market. By sharing our insights from real-world EV charging applications, we aim to contribute to the development of even more optimised and tailored SiC devices that meet the specific demands of our next-generation solutions.”
