LENZE BOOSTS MACHINE BUILDERS’ COMPETITIVENESS WITH LATEST OPEN AUTOMATION PLATFORM

At Dusseldorf’s Interpack exhibition in May, Lenze showcased its cloud-based

machine and app-management platform, Nupano, demonstrating the versatility and potential it offers to machine builders

N

upano is an intelligent solution that enables the digitalisation of machines in a straightforward way, helping

machine producers and end users to keep one step ahead of the competition. Thanks to being an open automation platform, any in-house or publicly available applications can be easily embedded into the machine and mastered through Nupano’s integrated app management software, enabling the equipment to be securely and remotely updated and maintained in the field. To show the benefits of partnering with Lenze, packaging machines from Heripack and Niverplast were also on the stand at Interpack. Heripack’s machine showcased the abilities of complete solutions for primary, secondary and tertiary packaging with OEE solutions inside, while Niverplast’s latest CombiPlast machine is a high-quality packaging solution for integrated case erecting and bag placing in one.

LENZE’S NUPANO OPENS NEW BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES The economic success of machine builders is increasingly determined by their ability to differentiate themselves through additional digital offerings and new business models. The Nupano cloud-based platform has been designed to enable mechanical engineering teams to embrace the benefits of digital innovation at the machine level. As such, Lenze’s Nupano: • Eases IT and OT collaboration – At the machine development phase, Nupano harmonises information technology (IT) and operations technology (OT), offering intelligent sharing functions for testing and validation.

• Enables app tailoring for competitive advantage – Through open IT standards, such as Linux (with native Docker as container technology), Nupano allows for the integration of publicly available apps and the integration, management and protection of tailor-made machine- specific apps. No customisation of open-source software is required for it to run on Nupano, and machine builders can work with any IT company to develop innovative, digital applications for their machines, independent of platform and hardware.

• Allows for security by design – The source code of the apps managed in Nupano always remains with the user, allowing them the choice of making the app publicly available or not.

• Facilitates lifecycle management and revenue stream ownership – Each machine can be securely updated with new app versions throughout its lifecycle in the field using Nupano, while ensuring ownership of any associated digital revenue streams is retained by the OEM. Apps can also be tested together on the platform, and a release workflow and lifecycle strategy created for the entire machine and plant fleet. Anne Konermann, Nupano product manager at Lenze, commented: “We were excited to be able to demonstrate the versatility and potential that our Nupano platform and other digital

We are particularly pleased to be able to show how our existing customers are using our expertise in hardware and software solutions to help them stand out in the competitive world of packaging machine building. At Lenze, our vision is to show OEMs the value of partnering with us; combining intelligent machines with intelligent services, to create new revenue streams and business models.”
