A few days ago I had the pleasure of meeting up with igus as their igus:bike, which has been manufactured from recycled plastic, entered the UK leg of its world tour. The bike is on a trip spanning 6000km in celebration of the

company’s 60th birthday, illustrating the benefits of igus motion plastics and sustainability in engineering, while also enabling the company to connect with its customers. I met the team by Big Ben in London and it was great to see the bike in action! A news story covering the tour can be found on page 8, and the company has created a blog of the bike tour which can be followed on the igus website (
www.igus.co.uk). On the topic of sustainability and sustainable
components, and TR Fastenings has developed a range of fasteners manufactured from recycled nylon. According to the company, the specific grade that performed best was a Nylon 6,6 derived from 100% recycled feedstock. At raw material level, this
offered up to a 90% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to virgin alternatives, a huge benefit for sustainable manufacturing. The company is now inviting design engineers to explore integration opportunities and to test samples. Find out more on page 35. Meanwhile, did you know that the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) will become mandatory in
December 2027? However, just proving a product’s cybersecurity when placing it on the market will no longer be enough. According to TÜV SÜD: ‘As manufacturers remain responsible for cybersecurity throughout a product’s life cycle, they must consider not only the operational phase of the digital product but its design, development, and production’. So what does this mean for designers and what are the requirements? Turn to page 18 to find out.
