VFDs: helping to efficiently produce a tasty cup of tea
I
n Sri Lanka, tea production is a major industry, employing over one million people and accounting for 3% of the country’s GDP. The quality of the produced tea will mainly depend on the withering
process. In the existing system, the withering troughs use DOL or Star/Delta Starters to start the fan and dampers to control the airflow. Nick Thorne, Invertek’s sales manager responsible for Sri Lanka, said:
“Each tea withering trough uses large amounts of energy to drive a motor powering fans that aerate the tea leaves to remove the moisture, drying them by up to 40-50% over a 12 to 18 hour period.” So, a multimillion-dollar project is currently underway in the country
to make the tea withering process more efficient and to reduce its impact on the environment. For this, variable frequency drive (VFD) manufacturer Invertek is supplying 200 of its Optidrive Eco drives for the first phase of the project, through sales partner Hayleys Aventura Pvt. The project will facilitate the implementation of 1,000 bio-digesters,
and 1,000 variable frequency drives in tea factories throughout the country, as well as the use of photovoltaic technology. Thorne added: “By replacing the existing starters, combined with the
efficiencies delivered through the Optidrive Eco, the amount of energy used will be reduced dramatically.” The Optidrive Eco VFDs provide optimised speed control of the fan
motors used, ensuring greater efficiency that minimises energy usage and cuts overall CO2
The drives will help create energy savings of 20 to 25%. Dylan Davies, Invertek’s product manager, explained that the
Optidrive Eco range was perfect for the tea project because of its ability to control motors efficiently. In addition, its onboard features mean there is no need for peripheral equipment, reducing costs and space. It also provides intelligent maintenance interval timing. Furthermore, with the Eco’s built-in keypad and OLED text display,
commissioning takes just minutes and ongoing operation is easily managed. It can also be used with Invertek’s new OptiStick Smart that allows Bluetooth access through the OptiTools studio software or OptiTools Mobile phone app.

New from Motion Control Products is a range of Coreless DC motors that are said by the company to offer advantages over standard DC motors – including longer life expectancy, light weight, high acceleration, less vibration, less noise and the ability to operate at very low speeds. These are available in sizes from
13mm diameter up to 40mm in the standard, motor-only format, although they can also be supplied with motor/gearbox combinations and with optional encoders. Applications include medical equipment,
dialysis, peristaltic and gear pumps, centrifugal blowers, lab centrifuges,
shakers and stirrers, house automation, ticket printing/dispensing, etc. Motion Control Products
