LINEAR MOTION  PRODUCTS

DOVETAIL SLIDES HELP TO IMPROVE POSITIONING ACCURACY

Durable dovetail slides, comprising an aluminium linear base and moving saddle, are available from norelem. Using these, design engineers looking for improved positioning accuracy on production lines can achieve fast, precise, adjustments. The slides are designed for

applications that need smooth, linear movement without risk of backlash, so are suitable for a variety of machines, optical devices and measuring instruments.

These enable the precise adjustment of processing units, measuring cameras, mirrors,

microscopes and laser heads; and can also be used to fine-tune soldering, plasma and welding heads, and to focus burning nozzles. Where more complex positioning is required, the slides can be quickly and simply combined to form cross tables. Alongside the standard model, norelem supplies a version with end plates. Where further

fine-tuning is required, there are also two products with a micrometer spindle, with the second also including a handwheel. Accessories include carriage guides and straps.

Aerotech is offering the Integrated Granite Motion (IGM) System, a custom engineered linear motion platform to fit application requirements. In an IGM system, machine components such as bearings, encoders and drive mechanisms are engineered and assembled directly on the granite base and bridge structures. These can be designed

with mechanical or air bearings, ball-screw or linear-motor drives, and a variety of feedback elements ranging from encoders to laser interferometers. Additional axes of motion, such as rotary, lift or piezo stages, or even galvanometer scanners, can be integrated onto the axes, all of which can be controlled from Aerotech’s A3200

unified control platform. According to the company, IGM systems

can have higher stiffness than a stage-on- granite solution because these have fewer parts in the structural loop, resulting in higher accuracy and better dynamic performance. They can also be more compact. This provides for the possibility of smaller Abbe offsets and better machine

positioning accuracy. In addition, it is simpler to optimise axis design parameters such as travel length and payload capacity.

CAPTIVE LINEAR ACTUATORS FOR COMPACT SPACES

Captive linear actuators in sizes NEMA 11 (28mm) and NEMA 17 (42mm) are now available from Nanotec. With the LGA28 and LGA42 series, the overall length of the guide is just 10mm longer than the working stroke, enabling their use in small spaces. These are, the company explains, ideally suited to applications that demand a combination of exact positioning, fast movement and long service life. Benefits of the actuators include very low backlash as well as high thrust and

tensile force. Furthermore, thanks to the integrated linear guide with movable polygon profile, high-precision feeding is possible without additional mechanical components. These are available in various lengths with different windings

and, optionally, with encoder. The electrical connection is made using an integrated connector.
