A BESPOKE DOOR SOLUTION
While dismantling the 132KV sub station in Saltcoats, one of a number being upgraded for Scottish Power, engineers from Idec Technical Services found that two of the electrical panel doors were no longer fit for purpose. Project manager,
Scot Macdonald, got in touch with Yorkshire Laser and Fabrication; and CAD engineer Scott Walker worked
closely with Idec to turn rough sketches, photos and measurements into detailed drawings – from which two tall and slim steel doors measuring 2180mm x 410mm were produced. To meet demands, Yorkshire Laser
created a set of bespoke lockable doors, complete with original 1960s sourced hinges, which look almost exactly like the existing cabinets. Yorkshire Laser and Fabrication has
worked with Idec for a number of years producing a metal components for use in the power industry – ranging from brackets and plates to full enclosures and panels. As a result of this latest project the company is well placed for future contracts.

19” RACK MOUNT ENCLOSURES WITH A SMOOTH TOP
METCASE has launched a new version of its COMBIMET 19” rack cases which feature a wraparound top that offers superior aesthetics and easier access to components. COMBIMET is METCASE’s
bestselling 19” aluminium enclosure. Applications include networking, communications, industrial computers, sound and studio, laboratory instruments and industrial control. The new version’s U-shaped
top reduces the number of case parts and removes the need for visible top screws. This new design combines
the versatility of COMBIMET with the aesthetics of METCASE’s VERSAMET 19” rack cases. Features also include ergonomic front handles and earth connection points on all panels. New solid top COMBIMET 19” is supplied unvented as standard, fully assembled and in a choice of two
colours: light grey (RAL 7035) and black (RAL 9005). It is currently available in one standard height (1U) and two depths: 265mm and 365mm. Custom sizes can also be specified. Accessories include a PCB mounting kit, PCB/panel fixing screws (M3), 19” mounting kits and mounting plates. Customisation services
include bespoke sizes, custom front panels, CNC machining, fixings and inserts, painting and finishing, digital printing of legends and logos. Other standard versions of
COMBIMET include the original design (vented/unvented top and base; removable top, base
and rear panels) in standard sizes 1U to 6U; a super-deep (610mm) case for server racks (1U to 6U) and an open top case (2U, 3U).

New to Orion Fans’ Electronically Commutated (EC) fan product offering is a 254mm IP68 ATEX rated version for waterproof and harsh environment applications. The low-power OA254EC-ATEX series EC fan combines energy conservation

Intertec’s tough GRP (glass fibre reinforced polyester) field enclosures for housing remote I/O and other control and instrumentation electronics, feature compact passive cooling to dramatically reduce costs of ownership. These, the company explains, will help EPCs and processing plant engineers to eliminate the need for large and costly plant buildings such as satellite instrument houses or remote instrument enclosures – which often need to be air conditioned and blast- and fire-resistant. The enclosures provide rugged dust and
waterproof environments to protect remote control equipment located deep inside processing areas. The enclosure concept simplifies the roll-out of more versatile distributed control architectures containing field equipment such as software-configured I/O, IIoT networking and PLCs. The advance can allow field control equipment enclosures to be assembled and sealed in the factory, avoiding the need for opening and exposure to dangerous local conditions at the

site during installation and operation. The GRP enclosures can be fabricated with
embedded insulation (a monolithic sandwich with layers of GRP sheet enclosing insulation), helping to protect against temperature extremes. Because of the electronic devices used, some
form of cooling may also be required. If power is available at site, this can be in the form of
conventional fan cooling. However, the temperature stability of highly insulated GRP boxes also makes it possible to efficiently exploit passive cooling techniques which require no electricity and have no moving parts – also making them suitable for deployment in hazardous areas. A tank of water plus a heat exchanger utilise the coolness of the night to moderate interior temperature during the day. As many advanced remote I/O applications will
be compact, Intertec has designed new passive cooling systems for smaller-sized cabinets and enclosures. These include solutions with a heat exchanger that doubles as a sunshade. The performance of the passive cooler can also be boosted by a small active element such as a water cooler. Intertec can fabricate passively cooled field protection systems like this in enclosure and box sizes down to around 40 litres in volume.
