DRIVES, CONTROLS & MOTORS FEATURE

DEEP SEA FISHING THE MODERN WAY

Drive solutions from NORD Drivesystems have been selected for a fish meal production system installed on deep sea trawlers, where reliability, efficiency and hygiene are essential

One of the fishing trawlers is equipped with a Hedinn Protein Plant HPP-2000 Marine plant which operates 24/7 and processes up to 50 tons of raw material every day. During a voyage, up to 1,000 tons of fish are caught

hen deep sea fishing, it often takes up to five days before the trawlers

reach the fishing grounds, and possibly four weeks before the ships return to port. The reliability of everything onboard is therefore essential. Not only are modern day trawlers

equipped with the latest technology, but their ‘wave piercing design’ means they tend to be more efficient and environmentally friendly than older ships. Some are even equipped with a fully automated fish factory which enables the fish to be processed, as well as directly filleting and packaging the produce. This therefore means that all stages of the work – gutting, cutting, packaging and deep freezing – are carried out at sea.

DRIVING SOLUTIONS Founded in 1922 in Reykjavik, Hedinn has developed the Hedinn Protein Plant (HPP)

fish meal production system. Offering economy and efficiency, the HPP is said to simplify the manufacturing process, reduce energy and water consumption, and takes up only a small amount of space. Fully automated, the machines enable low temperature operation as well as processing of the entire raw material including the offal. Because of these properties, the HPP is in demand both on land and at sea. There are currently four HPP’s in

operation at sea. One of the fishing trawlers is equipped with a HPP-2000 Marine plant which operates 24/7 and processes up to 50 tons of raw material every day. During a voyage, up to 1,000 tons of fish are caught. Some of the process stages require

the use of screw conveyors, driers and pumps – and these are driven by bevel gear and parallel geared motors from NORD Drivesystems. The company supplies optimally

service life, NORD drive solutions are ideal for use at sea

matched drive systems consisting of the gear unit, motor and frequency inverter. Not only are these powerful, reliable, robust and compact, but they are highly efficient, have excellent operational reliability and a long life. Simple operation, installation and maintenance also makes them very

FLAT BRUSHLESS MOTORS FOR COMPACT MOTION CONTROL APPLICATIONS

Now available from Delta Line is the Fulling BLW range of compact flat brushless motors. Ranging from 20 to 90mm in diameter, these are designed to meet the need for motion control solutions in ever-smaller packages. With these, a multipolar outer-rotor design enables the motors to reach up to 0.46Nm of continuous torque (90mm diameter variant), suiting them to applications where power density is important. There are eight motors in the range. The smallest is the

20BLW14, a 20mm diameter unit with a length of 14mm, a rated torque of 7.5mNm and 3W rated power. The 90BLW27, meanwhile, is a 90mm diameter motor with a length of 27mm, a rated torque of 460mNm and a rated power of 130W. According to the company, the motors add value to robotics applications with a lower torque ripple than

conventional motors thanks to their high number of poles and outer rotor design. Delta Line

user-friendly. Because of this, NORD drive units are ideal for use at sea. Einar Már Adalsteinsson from Hedinn

commented: “During the long weeks at sea it is important to have a functioning system on board. Interruptions to production must be avoided. However, if there is a problem, spare parts must be quickly available and a global customer service must be ensured. NORD Drivesystems is present throughout the world – and is therefore always close to the ship, wherever it may be. A special 24-hour service network also ensures that even a completely assembled geared motor is available as a replacement within a very short time.”

MEETING HYGIENE DEMANDS Of additional benefit, the NORD solutions met the demands for energy efficiency and hygiene. The fish meal production plant has

to be cleaned at regular intervals so a fine water mist is sprayed into the plant room, increasing the humidity to very high values. IP66 protection class, condensation holes, special coatings, stainless steel shafts, washdown design and smooth motors are just some of the options which increase the service life of the gear units and facilitate the cleaning process. Hedinn already has experience with

drive solutions from NORD Drivesystems, with the HPP operating successfully on land for many years. It went to sea for the first time in July 2017 on the trawler Sólberg. At present, a second ship has an HPP on board and further ships are under construction or are planned. Thanks to their high operational

reliability, dependability, availability and energy efficiency, geared motors from NORD Drivesystems are also on board.
