SUPPLEMENT ENCLOSURES & ENCLOSURE FURNITURE SPECIFYING ENCLOSURES FOR A ‘SMART’ WORLD
Industry 4.0 describes the integration of digital communication with the industrial process to create a network of ‘smart’ tools and components that can improve efficiency, quality, productivity and safety. Its development has also influenced Environmental Management processes – from simple home thermostats through to the largest industrial processes. A key challenge when designing environmental control solutions, however, is protecting the electronics from harsh environments. Extremely cold weather means
that water can freeze, which can lead to burst pipes and interruptions to water supplies. A very effective option for operators of industrial plants and commercial premises is to install thermostats to measure temperatures and activate trace heating systems. To meet demands, Spelsberg UK manufactures
and supplies the HT range of housed thermostats, a turnkey solution that delivers a fully adjustable thermostat housed within a high-strength polycarbonate TK enclosure. With the increased functionality brought about
by Smart Technology, engineers and facilities managers are able to collect data and feed it into the heart of their processes. Engineers designing external monitoring technology for Smart Systems will require enclosures that can protect electronics from the elements – such as Spelsberg’s range of lightweight, highly durable, GEOS enclosures which feature an innovative sealing system, making it ideal for weather protection. Features of the range include UV protection, IP67
ingress protection, IK09 impact protection and excellent corrosion resistance. These, however, also have an innovative Drain Protect seal system which serves to divert collected moisture from the environment via a drainage channel to the rear of the enclosure away from the access point. Spelsberg is able to offer a complete suite
of design, customisation and installation services to complement the standard range of GEOS enclosures – as well as many other enclosures found in Spelsberg’s standard range. While external monitoring
technology is likely to be installed outside, the majority of smart systems for Environmental
Management are installed inside. While the
enclosures will be less likely to face such harsh environments, it’s important that engineers are able to adapt a system to usage patterns that are frequently changing and technology that is always changing. So, Spelsberg’s AK distribution housing will
facilitate quick and simple changes to the physical hardware. These enclosures can be mounted adjacent to each other, so that large bespoke control panels can be built up and later adapted to meet changing requirements. Additionally, their perspex doors provide access for the system controls UI’s (user interfaces) whilst protecting the internal wiring. The AK distribution housing series is certified to
EN 60670-24, which defines special requirements for energy-consuming and protective devices to ensure safety with voltages up to 400 volts and feed current of up to 125 amps.

SUBRACKS AND FRONT PANELS SUIT NUCLEAR POWER STATION UPDATE PROJECT
As a designer and supplier of specialist fire detection products, Patol has particular experience in protection systems for the power generation industry, with specialised solutions for general fire detection systems and protection in areas such as turbine rooms, cable flats, tunnels and risers in both nuclear, conventional and biomass fired plants. In a recent project, the decades-old systems in a UK nuclear power station
needed to be updated, which involved the installation of up to date detection technology and the introduction of new signage to give comprehensive information about the fire system. For the project, Verotec provided its KM6-II 3U subracks, as well as a wide
selection of different front panels for the subracks and larger information panels. The panels for the subracks were machined and the legends silk screened. The
information panels show the physical layout of the protected areas with the fire zones indicated, enabling a potential fire to be precisely located for the zone indicator on the control panel. These larger panels were engraved and filled with acrylic ink for good durability. Three different 9U panel designs and five 6U ones were supplied, as were multiple 3U 4HP and 5HP front panels for the subracks.

www.spelsberg.co.uk ENCLOSURES FOR 5G COMMUNICATIONS
According to FIBOX, its ARCA wall-mounted enclosures offer optimal protection for radio modems and other telecommunications devices. This is a benefit today as interconnection of industrial plants and equipment
becomes ever more important, and the introduction of the 5G standard increases data rates, promising an even higher usability potential of wireless communication. Robust and low maintenance, the glass-fibre reinforced
polycarbonate enclosures let radio waves pass through unhindered so that no special measures are necessary when integrating Wi-Fi or other radio applications – devices can simply be installed inside the housing, without openings for antennas. The absence of external antennas reduces the risk of damage due to mechanical impacts such as by vandalism or during transport. According to the company, the ARCA series plastic control
cabinets only weigh half that of same-sized metal versions, yet they are equally suitable for use in harsh, demanding, indoor and outdoor applications. Featuring foamed PUR gaskets with IP66/IP67 ingress
protection, the enclosures permanently withstand ambient temperatures between -40˚C and 80˚C and offer impact resistance ratings up to IK10. Furthermore, grounding is no longer necessary due to the protective insulation.
ROBUST HINGES
OFFER CONTROLLED DOOR CLOSURE
Now available from FDB Panel Fittings, the PINET 30mm aluminium hinges are for use as pairs or together with a matching friction, detent or spring hinge to modify door opening characteristics. According to the company, the
matching soft-close hinge offers controlled closure in three configurations with two different torque damping settings, making them suitable for many types of enclosure, cabinet and cupboard – from factory floor to domestic furniture. The hinges are constructed in clear
or black anodised aluminium with a robust plastic hinge pin to resist corrosion, the company adds.
