FIA WORLD MOTOR SPORT COUNCIL APPOINTS COMPACT DYNAMICS AS SUPPLIER OF WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP HYBRID SYSTEM
Compact Dynamics, a Starnberg, Germany-based wholly owned subsidiary of Schaeffler, has been appointed by the FIA World Motor Sport Council as the exclusive supplier of the hybrid system to be used in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). The technology will be used in the new Rally1 vehicle category for an initial period of three years, starting with the 2022 season. The company’s high-performance P3-topology
hybrid system accommodates the motor- generator unit, control unit and battery in an extremely compact design envelope, thereby delivering maximum power density and meeting the FIA’s exacting requirements. The battery for the hybrid system is supplied by Compact Dynamics’ partner Kreisel Electric, based in
Rainbach, Germany. Development work on the hybrid system for the FIA is already underway, and initial vehicle testing is planned for 2021. “We are extremely proud of Compact
MOOG AND VOITH FORM JOINT VENTURE: HMS – HYBRID MOTION SOLUTIONS

Dynamics appointment as an exclusive FIA supplier,” commented Dr. Jochen Schröder, president of Schaeffler’s E-Mobility business division. “Compact Dynamics has been working with us since 2015 to develop the electric race-car drives that go with various other Schaeffler components in the highly successful systems we have been supplying for FIA Formula E vehicles. The know-how we gain from our involvement in motorsport feeds directly into the production- ready development of new technologies in areas such as electric axles, hybrid transmissions and electric motors for electric drive systems. Our involvement in the FIA World Rally Championship will further enhance this effect.”

PLEXTEK DTS WINS TWO CONTRACTS UNDER DASA CHALLENGE
Plextek DTS has been awarded two contracts under the latest Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) challenge to boost how autonomous vehicles and systems operate in challenging environments. The first is to develop a prototype directional radar
transponder that will help guide a radar-equipped unmanned vehicle to navigate challenging environments. The concept has some analogy to the way cats-eyes work in the road. The advantage of a radar equivalent is that it can operate over much greater ranges, is largely unaffected by obscurants such as rain, fog and smoke, and can encode information in the returned signal. The second contract is to develop advanced machine
learning algorithms to enable an autonomous platform to navigate and understand the scene ahead using high- resolution radar. A radar will provide greater ability to ‘see’ through rain, fog or smoke than a camera system but will tend to provide less resolution. Plextek’s algorithms will address this problem to ensure autonomous platforms can always navigate safely and understand their surroundings using advanced radar systems.
ast month we introduced a new topic into Design Solutions – a
medical & pharmaceutical section focusing on products, technologies and services to help in the fight against COVID-19. And with so many companies producing new products, solutions and
components, and joining consortiums to produce ventilators, PPE and so on, we felt we needed to continue the theme this month - not only as a way to show you what is being created (and often fast-tracked into production), but also to celebrate all those companies producing parts and transferring their expertise and knowledge into an area that is so incredibly important right now. Please turn to page 18 to find out more. But while the health of the nation is of the utmost priority at
the moment, we also need to remember that product/component design, original equipment manufacturing and machine building outside of the medical arena is still continuing. So additional features being covered this month include Fastenings & adhesives, Motion control, Sensors, Bearings and the Marine industry. So, wherever you are – working from home, self-isolating, furloughed, or back in the factory or office – enjoy the issue, and stay safe.

ALUMINA REFINERY PIPE AND CABLE SEALING
Roxtec has supplied Europe’s largest alumina refinery with a range of pipe and cable sealing solutions. The company was chosen to provide Aughinish Alumina with transit systems to support the creation and upgrading of cable entries into new and existing substations at the business’ refinery facility in County Limerick, Ireland. Ronan Mills, Roxtec market
manager for Ireland, said the transits involved are specifically designed for use underground, creating watertight and airtight seals where cables enter the refinery’s substations. As well as protecting expensive switchgear against water ingress, the seals will also prevent rodents and other small creatures entering substations at cable entry points.
