CAPNOMETER COULD HELP NHS QUICKLY WORK OUT WHICH PATIENTS NEED A VENTILATOR

Glasgow-based Wideblue is accelerating production of a medical device which could help the NHS quickly discover which COVID-19 patients are deteriorating and need a ventilator. N-Tidal, developed for Wideblue client Cambridge

Respiratory Innovations (CRI), is a simple-to-use, fully automated, small battery powered personal capnometer which is used to measure the amount of CO2

in exhaled

breath during normal relaxed breathing. The changes in CO2 concentration as a patient breathes in and out through the

device are measured and can be used to assess the health of a patient’s lungs and general condition. According to the company, the device could enable clinicians to prioritise their

use based on firm data, and it may also be useful to track progress of patients as they recover after ventilator use. N-Tidal was originally developed to be used by patients with respiratory

related diseases such as asthma, COPD and Congestive Heart Failure for hospital and home monitoring. This new application will hopefully see the device used in hospitals and the community to help in the fight against Coronavirus.

High performance charged coupled devices (CCDs) are being supplied by Teledyne for COVID-19 diagnostic scientific instruments. In the past few weeks, the UK CCD Fabrication team have been producing hundreds of CCD77-358 devices that will be designed into camera systems to support COVID-19 diagnostics. These highly sensitive

image sensors are used for low-light imaging applications such as microscopy and other scientific imaging techniques deployed

for research and diagnostic testing of COVID-19. The sensor is back-illuminated and has an image resolution of 512 x 512 pixels, a large pixel size of 24µm in size and a high dynamic range. Miles Adcock, president, Teledyne e2v Space & Quantum, said:

“The Coronavirus outbreak has triggered increased demand and interest for CCD and CMOS sensors. We expect to have manufactured several times the forecasted annual demand for the CCD77-358 devices by the end of this quarter alone.”

BATTERIES AND CHARGERS FOR MEDICAL DEVICES BUILDING MOTORS FOR

Accutronics is increasing production of batteries and chargers for ventilators, x-ray detectors and other critical medical devices in response to COVID-19. The company has been classified as a critical business during the ongoing

coronavirus situation to ensure it can manufacture the batteries required to reliably power devices during this crucial time. Mike Allen, managing director of Accutronics, said: “As a business already

well-positioned to serve the medical market, we immediately increased production of our medical batteries and chargers. This is not only to support the medical manufacturers working to produce more ventilators and critical care devices, but also for the hospitals and healthcare facilities providing frontline care. Everybody at Accutronics is working valiantly to do anything we can to support frontline workers and medical manufacturers.”

CRITICAL CARE EQUIPMENT The COVID-19 pandemic is creating an urgent need for critical care equipment such as ventilators and infusion systems, as well as increased requirements for lab analysers. So, the Portescap team is hard at work

building motors that power ventilators, infusion pumps, clinical diagnostic equipment and many other medical devices. The company is working closely with device manufacturers to reduce the stress on the medical community created by the sudden surge in demand and shortage in supply.
