IP67 CONNECTORS SUPPORT HIGH DATA BANDWIDTHS
New from binder, the 818 Series: M8 D-Coded connectors will be of interest to those who need to connect miniature sensors to Ethernet networks across applications that use the latest automation technology. The connectors are designed to support the high data bandwidths that are becoming common in smart factories and, when mated and locked, they protect to IP67. Although around 30% smaller than conventional M12
connectors, these are capable of enabling high-performance Ethernet connections of up to 100 Mbit/s Cat. 5e according to IEEE 802.3. Being Power over Ethernet (PoE+) compatible, they can supply both data and power to the sensor simultaneously. They are also capable of more than 100 mating cycles. With four gold-plated brass contacts which are symmetrically arranged and a Nickel-plated threaded ring, the connectors have a rated current of 4A and rated voltage of 63V DC. Termination is by screw clamp and wires from 0.14 to 0.5mm² can be accommodated. Operating temperature range is wide at -25˚C to +85˚C.

CABLE SEALS OFFER FIRE PROTECTION AT AN IRISH WHISKY DISTILLERY
Cable sealing solutions from Roxtec are being used by Irish Distillers Group to provide watertight and fireproof seals at cable entry points to the whiskey maker’s new maturation warehouses in Dungourney, County Cork. The company produces a range of
market-leading whiskeys at its nearby Midleton Distillery, including Jameson, Paddy and Powers Gold Label, and increased output at the site has led to the need for additional maturation warehousing. Maturation and storage facilities are
designed to hold a considerable amount of flammable alcohol, so it was essential to use cable sealing solutions that offer protection against fire and the risk of explosion. Roxtec’s R frames and GH frames with sealing modules are fire rated, airtight and watertight – ideal for protecting employees, stock and buildings against unforeseen circumstances, as well as ongoing problems such as weathering. While ensuring protection against key risks was a major consideration for Irish
Distillers, the company also required a sealing solution that was flexible enough to handle future increases in capacity. It therefore built at least 20% spare capacity into the transits to allow for time and cost-effective upgrades in years to come.

New from Foremost Electronics is the icotek KEL-SCDP single cable entry plate which provides a cable diameter clamping range from five to 36mm. This simple to install cable entry grommet allows single cables, hoses, and conduits without plugs to be routed through panels and sealed with a rating of IP65. Rigid cables may be installed at angles; and for railway technology applications there

simple three step process with no special tools required. A small hole is pierced between the different diameter sealing rings, the single circular membrane is then peeled away to accommodate the specific diameter of the cable or hose to be inserted which is then pushed through the hole. The peeled-off area is always round, ensuring a secure seal around the cable or hose. The KEL-SCDP is a very simple snap-in mount on to
panels or enclosures and can be plugged into cut-outs with wall thicknesses from 1.5 to 4.0mm without having to use any tools. Four panel cut out nominal diameters of 25, 32, 40 and 50mm are available and once installed it provides perfect edge protection and sealing to IP65, the company explains.

Nexans is to design, manufacture and supply high performance FLAMEX cables and services for Alstom’s new rolling stock, including metros, trams, regional and high speed trains. The company will be supplying tens of thousands
of kilometers of cables a year to form the electrical backbone of trains in applications ranging from high voltage cables for the pantograph and power distribution but also control and data cables for sensors. Typically, a one meter length of a modern train carriage will be fitted with around 1km of cables. With increased levels

faster data transmission and low loss coaxial cables for antenna – essential for wifi development. Rolling stock is one of the toughest applications
possible for electrical cables, where they can be subjected to extreme temperatures as well as high stresses, water, chemicals, impact and vibration. As well as durability, rolling stock cables must also offer exceptional performance in terms of fire safety to protect passengers, being both flame and fire retardant and emitting low smoke and toxicity. The FLAMEX power, control and communication cables are compliant with EN 45545-2 requirements for the highest hazard level class and RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) compliant.

four astronauts to the Lunar Gateway where they will board a human landing system for exploration missions to the surface of the Moon. The Lunar Gateway is an in-development spaceship which is intended to orbit around the Moon. It will be a solar-powered communication hub with living quarters for astronauts, a lab for science and research, ports for visiting spacecraft, and a holding area for rovers and other robots.

CONNECTORS FOR THE LUNAR GATEWAY
Bespoke connectors are to be designed, manufactured and supplied to Boeing by Smiths Interconnect for use aboard NASA’s Orion spacecraft and Lunar Gateway. These docking umbilical connectors will be used to transfer power, signal and communications to different modules on the space station. To withstand the challenges of space,
the connectors need to be capable of delivering high speed signal integrity to ensure there is a strong, consistent connection throughout the mission.
