PRODUCTS GEARS & GEARBOXES PLANETARY GEARBOXES SUIT 500 TONNE TRANSPORTER
Developed by Mining Machinery Developments (MMD), the Atlas Transporter enables heavy semi-mobile structures to be relocated in a safe and controlled manner. These are being used at the Mae Moh mine in Lampang, Thailand, which feeds the neighbouring Mae Moh Power Station. MMD semi-mobile sizing stations are fed by a small fleet of trucks which transport material from the mine face to the sizer unit which reduces material in preparation for efficient conveyor haulage out of the mine. As the mine face progresses, the sizer units are relocated to minimise the truck haulage distance. For this project, two Transporters are key to the relocation of the sizers and thus to the efficient and safe development of the mine. The track drives of the Transporter are driven by two right angled planetary gearboxes from the
Brevini Motions Systems S Series and are installed complete with Hydac airblast cooler. The S Series is Dana’s suite of gearbox solutions for applications requiring high torque with minimum dimensions, designed with fixed industrial equipment and self-propelled machines in mind. These were key factors in their specification, as the Transporter’s design is optimised to fit within compact dimensions and low height, to provide the ideal foundation for lifting large, heavy structures. The Atlas Transporter’s driven slew canopy enables payloads to be lifted and rotated at any height for
optimum travel, a capability facilitated by the specification of two Dana Brevini Motion Systems inline slew gearboxes. As with the track drives, weight and size issues were factors in the specification of Brevini Motion Systems’ slew drive gearboxes. Manufactured by Dana, these are an essential component in withstanding very high torque values while maintaining reduced dimensions, reduced weight and high efficiency. So far, Dana has supplied units for three Atlas Transporters.

Nabtesco’s compact, robust and reliable cycloidal gears are designed for high precision and power density, which makes them ideal for high-performance packaging lines, the company explains. The two-stage
reduction principle results in excellent performance with respect to dynamics and smooth operation, as well as high repeat and path accuracy. The integrated angular ball bearings absorb axial and radial loads, as well as bending moments, which makes the gears highly resistant to impacts and overloads. The solid shaft gearboxes of the RF-P series were
specially developed for dynamic applications with very limited space. They enable fast cycle times and high output speeds of 200rpm and are therefore said to be
setting standards in high-speed packaging processes. These are ideal for use in handling and positioning systems, such as SCARA, Delta and palletising robots. The servo gearboxes of
the RH-N series feature an integrated drive pinion and a motor flange for all standard motor types, guaranteeing fast and easy integration in the drive train. The reduced friction in the gearbox enables not only higher rotational speeds with low backlash, but the lower operating temperature is also a guarantee for low-maintenance components
with a long service life. These are hygienically designed and can be delivered with special coatings or filled with food-compliant H1 lubricants.

Now available from Renold Gears is an Oil Quality Sensor (OQSx) that can easily be retrofitted onto existing gear units that will, in effect, make an old gearbox a smart one. As about 75% of all gearbox failures
are the result of oil contamination, the OQSx has been designed to reduce maintenance, and cut downtime and the overall cost of ownership. It increases reliability and performance by monitoring the condition of the oil continuously, and reporting early signs of problems, allowing immediate action to be taken. Not only will this optimise service intervals by predicting when maintenance will be needed, but it cuts expenditure on expensive lubricants and the need for waste disposal because the gearbox oil is changed only when needed, based on a precise knowledge of its condition. The robust OQSx can be easily
installed on any application and provides real time monitoring, either as stand-alone technology or it can be connected to control and display systems such as PLCs, smart phones or tablets. It is certified to more than 15ppm sensitivity, detecting all wear and contamination elements, second- by-second in all oil types.
