Bollhoff’s RIVNUT is a range of blind rivet nuts designed specifically to provide a secure and strong mounting for thin-wall use where tapped threads won’t work. These can be used to great effect in both thin-wall metals and plastics (and combinations thereof), and are available in a range of sizes and finishes. A leading manufacturer, in
fact, has chosen the products to attach the foot bindings onto its snowboards. Snowboards, however, present a challenge – the boards need to cope not just with a lifetime of multi-directional shock loading, together with abundant compression and vibrational forces, but also need to survive (for years) being subjected to extremes of both cold and wet when in use, combined with heat and dry when stored indoors. As a result, in addition to the necessary structural demands being made on the
GASKETING ADHESIVE NOW IN PEN FORM
Since its introduction, LOCTITE 518 gasket sealant has been continuously developed – this anaerobic adhesive can now cure through light surface contamination and works well on stainless steel and aluminium without an activator. In addition, it has now been made available in pen form that delivers the proven leak-fighting properties of LOCTITE 518 via a roller. The product fills all voids, resists high
pressure and, when fully cured, maintains clamp load and prevents corrosion. The new, oil-tolerant formula ensures a consistent cure in standard workshop and maintenance conditions; and it forms a flexible, high-strength, seal that will not tear or decay. It also allows parts to be easily disassembled. TEREX, the manufacturer of lifting and
materials handling equipment, has moved away from PTFE gasketing material to this Henkel gasketing adhesive to seal cast steel housings on power take off gearbox units. LOCTITE 518 is applied along the gasket face with a Trax Roller (a large version of the 518 pen). The mating faces are then brought together and secured using M10 nuts on studs that have been secured with LOCTITE 648 threadlocking adhesive. The move to adhesives has provided a much stronger assembly which prevents micromovement between the flanges and any subsequent leaks.

fasteners, corrosion remains an ever-present threat. Tests revealed that RIVNUT was the only fastener
of its type to offer both the design strength and required corrosion resistance over the long term. Although stainless steel is
clearly the preferred option for many applications where absolute corrosion-resistance is required, standard RIVNUT fasteners can also be specified in other steels with a variety of coatings to help prevent the
onset of both electrolytic and galvanic corrosion. RIVNUT is available as standard in aluminium, steel or stainless steel, and users can choose between specifying standard stainless or zinc and zinc-nickel plated finishes. The product can also be specified as either a nut or stud.

BONDING COMPONENTS TO GLASS SURFACES
New from Lohmann Technologies is the DuploCOLL G range of component bonding
tapes, developed specifically for applications requiring a combination of high bond strength and reduced production time cycles. The double-sided PE foam bonding tape offers resistance to weathering, extreme temperature variations and high moisture content without loss of adhesion. Using a combination of Lohmann-
SELF-ADHESIVE CABLE TIE MOUNTS
HellermannTyton’s SolidTack MB and FlexTack cable tie mounts are now available from TTI. These self-adhesive mounting bases feature a high-performance acrylic adhesive which is specially designed to adhere strongly on high and low energy surfaces like metals, plastics, glass, etc. SolidTack MB Series mounts are commonly used in
electrical panels, telecoms cabinets and for fixing parts of wiring harnesses in railway carriages, aircraft or on vehicles. FlexTack cable tie mounts also make it easy to securely affix cable runs on curved or angled surfaces without having to apply thick layers of two-part epoxy adhesive. Delivering excellent initial adhesion, which increases with
time and also offers very good weathering resistance, the mounts can be used with operating temperatures up to +105˚C.

developed activators and pure acrylic adhesives, initial trials reveal that the DuploCOLL G range has proved ideal for one of its key target markets: the bonding of components direct to glass surfaces. With a compressible backing made of PE foam, the new range of tapes also provides design and production teams with valuable tolerance compensation properties. Furthermore, the introduction of the DuploCOLL G range now allows production engineering teams to do away with the need to use primers prior to applying the bonding tape. DuploCOLL G is available in a variety of
thicknesses, and the tapes are available as precision die-cuts to customer designs. The material provides useful flexibility on the production line, with an initial tack time of 30 minutes followed by full material performance in less than 24 hours. The tape is approved for use in temperatures ranging from -40˚C to + 90˚C.

ADHESIVE BENEFITS NEW CYCLING HELMET DESIGN
Every now and then, a call comes along that challenges the Chemique Adhesives’ development team and helps with the creation of a brand new product that solves a costly and dangerous problem. As an example, Hedkayse was set up in 2015 by Tony Walker and Andy Creak, who wanted to design a resilient cycling helmet that could be worn time and again, even after impact. The polystyrene used in traditional cycling helmets deforms during impact to provide what’s known as sacrificial protection – the reason why manufacturers recommend that you replace your helmet even after a simple knock. So, the company set out to develop a lightweight helmet that can be dropped, knocked, even hit with
baseball bat – without impairing the protection it provides. With robustness and reliability key aims, an adhesive was needed that would guarantee a strong and dependable bond between the proprietary impact-absorbing material, Enkayse, and the flexible exoskeleton of the helmet. The company therefore turned to Chemique Adhesives. “Hedkayse approached us about their new helmet concept and we were able to work together
and provide a water-based adhesive from our Protak range that offers excellent performance as well as ease of application,” said Slin Bangar, laboratory manager at Chemique Adhesives. Protak UNI2HV is a customised water-based polyurethane dispersion with high viscosity that can simply be brushed on, without the need for complex applicators or extraction fans for vapours. The newly developed helmets have been proven to comply with the requirements of the
European Personal Protective Equipment Directive (PPE: 89/686/EEC) and specifically to the European standard EN 1078, ‘Helmets for Pedal Cyclists and for Users of Skateboards and Roller Skates’ which specifies requirements and test methods.
