BELTS, PULLEYS & CHAINS FEATURE The Zeroseam flat belt
high coefficient of friction with a strong resistance to abrasive materials such as paper. The result is a reliable firm grip over a long service life. The new line of Zeroseam
belts is made in a mouldless production process developed by Nitta technology, which allows rubber-coated seamless belts to be produced to
customer-specified lengths and widths. The Zeroseam belts are currently available in
three different configurations, all of them customisable to customer needs,
A
s part of the Sonoco
Group, Sonoco Consumer Products in Mechelen, Belgium, produces cardboard tubes for the food industry at a non-stop rate. This means that every minute saved in machine maintenance counts. At the factory, spiral tube winding
machines are used to produce paper cores, and a key factor in their frictionless performance is the tube winding belt which is used to apply pressure to the product to achieve the required level of adhesion between the individual layers of paper. This application, however, poses a unique set of challenges for the belts as it requires strong tension, high flexibility and a firm grip, as well as abrasion resistance.
MEETING WINDING DEMANDS The winding machines operate at high production speeds, placing high levels of stress on the tube winding belts. Polyamide belts were being used but these had to be replaced frequently, so looking for an alternative solution that would cut maintenance costs and machine downtimes, the company contacted Bogaert Transmission, Nitta’s partner in Belgium. Working together, Nitta and Bogaert’s
service teams identified the rigidity of the belt material as the reason for the high wear, so recommended Nitta’s new Zeroseam ZS-TWL-42H to increase the belts’ service life. Specifically developed to meet the
needs of tube winding applications, the Zeroseam belts have a strong, seamless surface made of structured rubber. The combination of a strong cord tension layer and their seamless design makes these belts highly flexible and means that the belt pressure is applied evenly to the paper, allowing the belt to run at a lower tension – significantly increasing its longevity while also reducing high cost energy consumption. The rubber compound used is produced to Nitta’s own proprietary formulation and unites a
with additional belt types currently being developed for both tube winding machines and other applications.

Cardboard tube production belts up
With their strong cord tension layer
and seamless design, Zeroseam belts from Nitta Industries Europe have cut maintenance costs and machine downtime on the winding machines
used by a producer of cardboard tubes Commenting on the use of the
Zeroseam belts on the winding machines, Luc van Campenhout of Sonoco in Mechelen said: “Of course we were expecting to see a marked improvement in the belt’s longevity, but the actual production numbers we achieved with these new belts go far beyond our expectations.” The service life of the Zeroseam belts exceeds that of the previously used polyamide belts by a factor of seven, without loss of production speed or product quality.

FREEZE! KEEP YOUR ENERGY CHAINS MOVING WHEN THE WEATHER GETS ICY
Inclined lifts are used to carry people or goods over mountainous terrain, at high altitudes and in adverse weather conditions, and must offer long-lasting, trouble-free operation. In such situations, there is the risk of freezing, especially in systems with energy chains that are moved infrequently; and if the system does freeze to the running surface, operation can only be resumed after a complicated defrosting process. To help, igus has introduced the ice-chain energy chain, designed to help prevent cable management systems seizing up during wintery conditions. Here, two raised domes per chain link are injection-moulded onto the crossbars of the e-chain
along the outer radius of the chain – reducing the contact surface area and thus the risk of freezing. The rectangular stop-dog system, which distributes the forces evenly, and the strong pin/bore connection in the side links, guarantee high strength, offering large payloads or fill weights. As the domes are only 1.8mm high, the installation height is only slightly larger when compared to standard e-chains. The ice-chain is made of weatherproof and
media-resistant high-performance plastics – the igumid G material can be used in applications down to -40˚C. With jacket materials made of PUR or TPE, chainflex cables provide trouble-free service even at temperatures well below freezing over very long time periods. In addition, if temperatures go down to below -35˚C, a chainflex CF29 series servo cable can be used.
