PRONET NOMINATED FOR TOMORROW’S HEALTH AND SAFETY AWARD F

ortress Interlocks’ proNET safety and communications module has been

nominated for the Tomorrow’s Health and Safety Award 2017. proNET adds industrial Ethernet

communications to its amGardpro range of safety interlocks. This enables the amGardpro’s features to be distributed IO (input-output) on a PROFINET network, with safety information exchanged using PROFIsafe extensions. Benefits include reduced installation costs, easier maintenance, and greater availability of data for improved diagnosis. Most safety interlocks are either not

electrically connected (deliberately so in the case of some mechanical, trapped key interlocks) or are ‘wired at gate’, meaning all

electrical connections go via a control PLC and safety relay. This can mean up to 20 wires from each device going to the control panel. proNET overcomes this by taking advantage of PROFINET and PROFIsafe, allowing operators to have just one power and Ethernet cable going from the control panel, allowing devices to be attached in a variety of topologies. The amGardpro is a range of fully integrated

safety interlocks, including solenoid and non- solenoid safety switches. It has an extensive range of additional options, including key control modules, internal and escape release, redundant sensors, lock out/tag out, push buttons, estops, and indication lights for enhanced functionality, all assembled in one device. FINALISTS ARE SHORTLISTED FOR SEMTA SKILLS AWARDS

Talented engineers and innovative companies have beaten stiff competition to make the final of the Semta Skills Awards, which honour the best in British Engineering. Hundreds of nominations, from across nine award categories, have been shortlisted to just 27 by an independent industry panel of judges. Firmly established as a key date in

the calendar, the Semta Skills Awards will be held at London’s Hilton Hotel, Park Lane, on Wednesday March 8, 2017, hosted by BBC Breakfast’s Steph McGovern. Twelve companies, ten men and

five women will battle to be named the winner of their category, with one lucky finalist being named the overall Best in British Engineering. The nine categories are: Apprentice

of the Year (sponsored by MBDA); Higher Apprentice of the Year (sponsored by Rolls-Royce); Graduate of the Year (sponsored by Airbus); Skills Champion of the Year (sponsored by BAE Systems); Skills Innovation of the Year (sponsored by GetMyFirstJob); SME Investment in Skills (sponsored by Jaguar Land Rover); Technician of the Year (sponsored by Royal Academy of Engineering); Training Partner of the

Year (sponsored by EAL) and Diversity in Engineering (supported by WISE). Six hundred people are due to attend the networking evening, with a key note speech from Antony Jenkins, chair of the Institute for Apprenticeships. The awards will be attended by some of the advanced manufacturing and engineering’s biggest brands, together with the crucial SME supply chain that make up 98 per cent of the sector. NORTH SEA WIND FARM £1.5B DEAL SEALED

I’d like you to join me in congratulating Rachael Morling, editor of Design Solutions, on the birth of her son, Matthew. Rachael will be taking some time out to enjoy being a new mum, and I will be looking after Design Solutions until she returns. So far this year, a CBI survey

of 461 manufacturers has revealed a positive start, with the volume of domestic orders rising, and export orders continuing to grow. Manufacturers are generally feeling more optimistic about their business prospects in the months to come. Lisa Peake - Acting Editor

Roxtec has secured a major contract to deliver its safety seal solutions to an ambitious £1.5billion offshore wind farm project in the North Sea. The deal will see a wide range of sealing solutions used on the platform, which will sit 20 miles offshore near the seaside town of Cromer, North Norfolk. Roxtec’s UK managing director, Graham O’Hare, said the cable sealing

systems will meet the long-term lifecycle of the 402MW wind farm, whose turbines will provide power to 410,000 UK homes, and which is set to be commissioned during 2017. “The Dudgeon wind farm project will see the delivery of customised

bulkhead and deck seals. Our seals are designed to be flexible with easy maintenance access and spare capacity for upgrades. They are both easy to install and inspect. This proved another positive factor when it came to winning the contract. Our team is providing training as part of the deal.” Roxtec’s sealing solutions are used for different applications in wind

projects, from control cabinets to generators and converters. They offer protection against fire, gas, water pressure and corrosion, and provide cable retention.

Students and children are given a unique opportunity to explore where their future can take them at the UK's largest celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) for young people - with 12 theatre shows, over 150 hands-on activities and the opportunity to talk to thousands of scientists and engineers, including young people who have just started work. www.thebigbangfair.co.uk

Sensors & Instrumentation is back, in a new hall and with added features for 2017. Now in its 8th year, and taking place at the NEC Birmingham from 26 – 27 September, the annual Sensors & Instrumentation exhibition is firmly established as the UK’s only focused industrial sensors event for the test, measurement and control sectors. sensorsandinstrumentation.co.uk

Hansford Sensors will be showcasing its wide range of vibration monitoring solutions at Maintec 2017. The company will also be using the show to celebrate both its 10th year in business and the 10th occasion that it has appeared at the UK trade exhibition. www.hansfordsensors.com

In August 2018, the WEEE2 Directive will come into force in the UK. Under the existing WEEE Directive, pumps have not been included. However, the first revision of the Directive has now brought into play many products that were previously out of scope, including pumps. www.bpma.org.uk

amGardpro makes it suitable for a host of industrial applications when safety, strength and reliability are of paramount importance.
