Welcome to the first issue of 2025! Towards the end of last
year I attended a couple of very interesting press events. During the first, Turck Banner discussed the phasing out of petrol and diesel vehicles and how, as we move towards alternative
solutions such as electric and hydrogen power, improved solutions will be necessary to meet customer demands. The company went on to explain that while moving on

to new technologies is essential, faced with competition manufacturers are unable to afford the time needed to plan, build, program and test a new production line using traditional methods. This is where the Modular Type Package (MTP) approach comes into play. The modular approach, the company explains, works because many parts of a manufacturing process are common with other processes. This means that a common section, with its own control and intelligence, can be dropped into the whole line. At the second event, Outokumpu examined how steel is almost everywhere and will continue to be crucial for future development. The problem here, however, is that steel production accounts for 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. As a company committed to carbon neutrality, Outokumpu has set the ambitious target of becoming the first choice in sustainable stainless steel. But how is it going about this? Both the above stories can be found in our Sustainability in Manufacturing Supplement. Among other fascinating topics this month we: demystify machinery safety for designers of industrial
equipment; examine how new production technologies are bringing the many benefits of hybrid bearings to mass-market applications; and learn how, in the aerospace and defence industry, the seamless integration of springs and other critical components into complex assemblies is as much about supply chain efficiency as it is about engineering precision. I hope you enjoy reading the issue!
