EDITOR’S COMMENT & CONTENTS On the road to a greener heating future

he long-awaited Heat and Buildings Strategy has finally been released and has drawn a very mixed reaction from across the industry. Unsurprisingly, those who are primarily involved in the business of heat pumps, had the most to celebrate as the Strategy fully embraced their delivery and even announced a £5,000 grant to households for purchasing and installing heat pumps. But there are others who believe the Government’s vision does not go far enough, and fails to fully take into account some key considerations. The cost and suitability of heat pumps for a great number of properties is a subject that comes up time and again. industry are at pains to point out that properties will need to undergo considerable insulation upgrades if heat pumps are to work effectively. The shortage of skilled heat pump installers is another concern, although it must be said heat pump bodies are currently making a concerted effort in the drive to upskill installers.

While there are clearly some issues that need to be ironed out, we have to start somewhere to reduce the UK’s dependency on fossil fuels. Critically no-one is being forced to give up their gas boilers just yet – this will be a gradual transition to greener choices. Let’s hope it’s the start of a brighter, greener heating future.
