Veolia, decarbonising energy specialist, is planning a new district heating network in London that will deliver heat from the Group’s SELCHP Energy Recovery Facility (ERF), working in partnership with Southwark Council. By using 75GWh per year of low carbon heat from the electricity generating process that treats non-recyclable waste, the network aims to supply 4,700 homes across 11 social housing estates and schools.

Currently almost half of the final energy consumed in the UK is used as heat and the domestic, commercial and public sectors account for two-thirds of this energy consumption. This is largely fossil fuelled and district heating networks, using the heat from the waste-fed electricity generation process, represent an efficient, affordable and decarbonising alternative to provide households with cleaner energy. Veolia will design, construct, commission and operate the network. Once operational, the infrastructure project aims to provide the heat with around a 60% renewable content due to the biogenic component of the

treated waste. The ambition is to save an estimated 14,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year compared to the current natural gas or oil boiler derived heat supplies. Heat, supplied as hot water, would be supplied through a 7km network of insulated pipework at temperatures up to 95°C, and fed into the systems that distribute heat in the connected buildings to meet the thermal demands at each location. As this system represents a low carbon solution compared to alternative supplies, emitting only 0.026kgCO2/kWh, it would also help to advance Southwark Council’s ongoing commitment to tackling the climate emergency and reducing the boroughs carbon footprint. In a significant move earlier this year, Southwark Council approved a Local Development

Order (LDO) permitting the construction of the new network. They are the first authority in London to introduce a LDO.

This new network builds on the success of the existing urban heating network powered by SELCHP, which already provides low-carbon heat to 2,700 households and has saved around 95,000 tonnes of CO2 over the past ten years. The extension aims to support the future growth to accommodate 20,000 new homes over the next 15 years in line with Southwark Council’s Area Action Plan. Estelle Brachlianoff, CEO of Veolia said: “Developing local decarbonisation helps to break the dependence on fossil fuels and provide reliable heat to support communities and address energy price volatility. Our new district heating network in London will enable the UK to make further progress towards its decarbonisation targets by 2035.”

Karl brings over 15 years of experience as a CFO in manufacturing, having previously held positions at Bulgin and Coveris UK. He said: “Stuart Turner has a remarkable legacy of quality and innovation, and I’m excited to join at such an exciting time in its growth. My focus will be on building operational efficiency across our sites, ensuring we remain dynamic and competitive while continuing to deliver exceptional value to our customers.” Matt Lyndon adds his experience in engineering and product development having worked across a range of industries, including medical, FMCG, and industrial. He said: “I’m thrilled to be joining a company that is so well-known across the industry for engineering excellence and quality. I hope to use my experience to enhance our product portfolio and drive innovation and business growth in both the commercial and domestic sectors.”

Dominic Hill, chief executive of the Stuart Turner Group, added: “We are delighted to welcome Karl and Matt to our leadership team. Both bring a wealth of experience and expertise that will be invaluable as we look to the future.”

Conex Bänninger strengthens sales team

Conex Bänninger, the global manufacturer of high- quality fittings, valves and accessorieshas appointed Kyle McArthur as regional technical sales manager for Scotland and Northern Ireland. Kyle joins from Emtec Group, where he was the Contracts Supervisor responsible for project execution and delivery. A qualified HVAC engineer, his wide-ranging experience gained within the sector has helped develop his commercial awareness, technical knowledge and problem-solving abilities. Kyle said: I am looking forward to meeting existing customers and reaching out to many new ones. Over the coming months, I will be introducing myself to installers, contractors, specifiers and merchants, as I widen my network of contacts. “It is great to have joined a global brand with a track record of innovation, and an impressive range of high-quality products, backed-up by a first-class technical support team.”

Kyle says that the industry is clearly witnessing an ongoing revolution, as installers move away from brazing to ‘press-fit’ – a change that will gather pace over the next 5 to 10 years.

He concluded: “Press-fit is definitely the future. Therefore, educating apprentices, trainees and installers that may not have switched yet about the benefits of press is a good pathway to introducing them to Conex Bänninger’s high quality range of press-fit products,” he concluded.

Alpha appoints regional sales manager

Heating specialist Alpha has strengthened its team with the appointment of Richard Eldridge as regional sales manager for the southern region. Richard’s journey with Alpha is not a new one. In 2012, he joined the company as a Sales Coordinator, based in the Kent head office. After six years, Richard pursued another career opportunity at HPS Plumbers Merchant, but 2024 saw his return to Alpha in his new role. Commenting on his appointment at Alpha,

Richard said: “Returning to Alpha at such an exciting period for the business is great timing. With

so much happening around hybrid and heat pump systems, as well as with the tried-and- tested gas boiler means I’ve joined with lots to get stuck into. “There is plenty Alpha has to offer installers, developers, housing associations and

merchants and I’m thrilled to be working with the rest of the amazing sales team to develop this even further.” Andrea Carmeli, managing director for Alpha, commented: “We’re so delighted to have Richard rejoin the team. Early in his career he proved himself to be a stellar addition to the sales team, hitting his targets and creating a strong reputation with his customer base, and I’m excited to see where he takes the team now in a leadership role.”
