EDITOR’S COMMENT & CONTENTS True sustainability depends on accuracy
M
any businesses are embracing low carbon technologies, and that needs to become the norm if we have any hope of achieving ambitious carbon reduction targets both the previous and current governments have adopted.
However the pressure to be seen to be doing the right thing, from shareholders, the public and the media, can result in businesses embellishing on their Economic, Social, Governance (ESG) reporting. Recently the issue of greenwashing – the practice of making false or misleading claims about a company’s environmental impact or the environmental friendliness of its products – has been gaining a lot of media coverage. So too, has the popular emission reduction strategy of carbon off-setting, which has recently
been criticised for not being the silver bullet we once believed it to be. This month we have a fascinating feature from Kam Singh, executive director of ESG at EMCOR UK on pg 43 which covers many of these topics. Kam says buisnesses need to create an accurate picture of their sustainable initiatives and this can only be achieved with true transparency. It’s one of the highlights of this issue, and the points raised will also most likely be addressed in some form at the upcoming Building Services Forum, to be held at the Building Centre in London, on November 28. There’s plenty more on the forum starting from pg 25. Other features this month include: • Heating & Hot Water; Medical & Healthcare; Pumps, Waste Management & Water Treatment; Building Controls, and Electrical Services.
