BUILDING SERVICES FORUM Building Services Forum:
Improving Performance & Safety in Public Buildings
The Building Services Forum returns to the Building Centre in London on 22 May, with a focus on Improving Performance and Safety in Public Sector Buildings
H
HEADLINE SPONSOR Mitsubishi Electric
Speaker: Harvey Loyal, market & product intelligence specialist
Title: Redefining VRF Systems: Meeting carbon targets and enhancing building performance.
Overview: As the push for low- carbon buildings intensifies, the design and operation of HVAC systems face greater scrutiny for their carbon impact. Building services play a crucial role in a building’s whole-life carbon footprint, with benchmarks like those from the Greater London Authority attributing 21% of this impact to building services. This presentation explores the evolving landscape of air conditioning systems, focusing on the challenges and opportunities presented by new legislation and carbon reduction targets. It will delve into the potential of R32 VRF technology to meet these demands, optimise energy performance, and enhance indoor environments for the future. Targeted at consultants and designers, this session offers valuable insights into specifying R32 VRF solutions and an early look at the details of the latest innovations from Mitsubishi Electric.
Octopus Energy
Speaker: Hanna McCarthy, business development manager, zero bills
Title: Building the New Standard with Octopus Zero Bills
British Board of Agrement Speaker: Julie Bregulla, COO
Title: Navigating construction compliance and governance through 3rd party certification in a complex sector ready for innovation
Overview: Understanding the perils of interpretation, risk and technical rigour around product selection, and fitness-for-purpose while finding the balance of encouraging and supporting innovation.
24 BUILDING SERVICES & ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEER MAY 2025 Ambar Kelly Speaker: Nick Atkinson, director
Title: Shaping the future of high-risk building safety: The key Building Safety Act impacts on Gateways Two and Three
Overview: Examining the recent phasing out of BS476 Parts 6 and 7, and the substantial impacts on Gateways Two and Three – particularly in relation to the use of combustible materials in high- risk buildings.
Overview: Zero Bills is the world-first smart tariff enabling customers to live in energy efficient homes with no energy bills. Launched in 2022 by Octopus Energy, it is now projected to deliver thousands of bill-free homes across affordable and private tenures with partners including Vistry, Clarion, and Thakeham.
As consumers increasingly place
a premium on greener property, just how powerful is the ‘zero’ effect? Join Octopus to hear how eliminating energy bills unlocks the commerciality in net zero.
Alfa Laval
Speaker: Neil Parry, global head of distric energy
Title: The importance of delta T and how to optimise a building ready for a low carbon future
Overview: Looking at why delta T, and the maximisation of it, is essential on the road to decarbonisation. The presentation will show that the building modifications required are generally the same, regardless of whether the building will be decarbonised with heat pumps or through connection to a district energy network. Some 80% of the buildings we have now, will still be in use by 2050 when the UK is legally required to be Net Zero. So, addressing our existing building stock will be essential regardless of whether the building is domestic or commercial.

osted again by freelance journalist and PR consultant Ewen Rose, delegates can expect to learn about the latest technologies and solutions, share ideas and network with
peers and leading manufacturers. Public buildings accommodate many people daily which makes safety a critical concern, one that demands standards are met to reduce risk of accident, injury and emergencies.
They must also adhere to increasingly stringent building codes and regulations with non-compliance leading to potential legal issues, fines or closure. The case for improving performance is just as compelling particularly with regards to energy efficiency as this not only reduces operational costs but contributes to environmental sustainability by lowering energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This month, The Building Services Forum aims to bring together key industry experts to discuss some of the hot topics affecting performance and safety of public buildings. Here is a breakdown of the day’s speakers.
