Hounsfield Boilers has come to the rescue of a landlord in Suffolk whose wood chip burning system was proving inconsistent due to the demands of a substantial hot water and underfloor heating system. Orwell View Barns is a collection of short let cottages and a barn conversion on the banks of the Orwell River, Suffolk. The complex has a total of 14 bedrooms, so an unreliable heating system was a real issue for landlord Richard Wrinch.

rinch explains: “The 120Kw wood chip system was only 10-years old but was suffering from wood chip blockages, which resulted in heating issues to the tenants.
We discussed possible solutions with our engineer, Nick Grimwood, and we opted for two oil-fired boilers, which could work together to support the woodchip burner; now when sensors pick up a drop in water temperature, the oil boilers kick in to ensure a constant supply of heat.”
The heating demands of a standard household can sometimes be a concern, but when you are a landlord of a small complex of households, those concerns can be amplified. Add to this remote, off-the grid rural dwellings and it is clear why a reliable backup system was so badly needed. Grimwood is the MD of Suffolk heating installers, Grimwood and Co, he had no hesitation in specifying Hounsfield Boilers for the job. He installed two of Hounsfield’s 20 / 25 kW Tuscan External oil boilers. The boilers have integral water temperature frost thermostats, which senses the water temperature instead of the air temperature, to prevent unnecessary boiler ignition. The boilers also benefit from aircraft grade oil line, visible neon indicators, a combined paper element oil filter and fire valve assembly and a heat exchanger designed for maximum efficiency and to avoid ‘hot spot’ heat fractures.

Grimwood’s customers may recognise the big boiler brands over Hounsfield, but his belief that Hounsfield are simply the best boilers on the market is enough to convince his clients that they are better off with a small, boutique manufacturer. Wrinch admits that Hounsfield was a new name to him, but enthuses: “I was very happy to go with Hounsfield Boilers after Nick told me all about them, the reliability, the attention to detail and ease of use”. He continues: “The high- quality parts and resulting long life-span were also very attractive as I want a boiler to last more than 10 or 15 years. I don’t want be part of a throwaway society.”
This sentiment is echoed by Andrew Hounsfield: “I am a passionate believer in reducing the carbon footprint of the boiler industry. Whilst oil is not an endless resource, my boilers have 97% efficiency and make the very best of the precious fuel. Plus, with HVO looking very likely to replace kerosene, oil boilers are here to stay and will help reduce our carbon footprint. However, I truly believe that ‘being sustainable’ is more than just the efficiency of the boiler and what fuel is used.
It’s pointless having a highly efficient boiler if it is only built to last ten years and needs an endless supply of replacement parts during that period. I’ve sourced parts for our boilers which last a lifetime, such as aircraft grade Teflon hoses instead of rubber, and they will not degrade or need replacement.
