INDUSTRY COMMENT A strong defensive line up
atrick Hogan, chief commercial officer at Honeywell Building Technologies, explains the latest research in post-COVID sports fan behaviour and how Honeywell’s special kit can get stadiums back up and running.
P
Empty stadiums have become symbolic of lockdowns and the pandemic - an unfortunate but essential step that has helped safeguard sporting continuity. But as we all know, there’s no substitute for a crowd in full voice.
The good news is that the return of fans to stadium-based events is already underway. Carefully managed and closely controlled, the shouts from the terraces will soon be real rather than recorded.
According to new Honeywell research, at least 54% of surveyed UK sports fans hope to attend at least three games despite crowd limits remaining in force.
Yet despite the appetite to return to grounds, even the most ardent supporters want to see this return managed safely. A further 88% of respondents want an increased focus placed on enhanced safety measures when they return to stadiums, illustrating that a vast majority of fans take the threat the pandemic poses seriously. Technology will have a major part to play in that safety provision; but knowing what systems to use and how to effectively deploy them needs careful thought and expertise. Honeywell works with major stadium operators around the world, drawing on our experience and insights to help lay the foundations for a successful return to live sporting events.
This report provides the view from the UK stands as we look forward to the return of fans to sports grounds up and down the country, and the steps we are taking behind the scenes to help fans return to the sports they love.
Honeywell conducted a study into UK fan attitudes towards a return to stadium-based sporting events. We asked 2,000 sports enthusiasts their views about the importance of safety standards and their role in supporting a return to the stands. There is widespread excitement at the prospect of returning to live events, with 54% of surveyed fans hoping to secure tickets to at least three games while stadium crowd limits are in place. Concerns regarding COVID-19 remain, with many surveyed fans citing a need for new technologies and protocols, such as air quality management and enforced social distancing, to help reduce transmission risks.
Importantly, 79% of those surveyed said they wanted clubs and stadium operators to notify them in advance of attendance that these types of measures are in place. Fans are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to get back to stadiums to watch live sports, but they are not prepared to sacrifice safety in stadiums. In fact, their expectations regarding safety protocols during game-day appear to be increasing.
Fans have clearly signalled that they are looking for reassurances from clubs and stadium operators that they have processes, protocols and technologies in place to help reduce safety concerns – not only in a venue but also around it. Using these tools to safely minimise the time it takes fans to enter and leave a stadium is critically important.
The Honeywell Kit
Honeywell has developed an integrated set of solutions to help stadium owners and sports clubs improve the health of their built environments.
The aim of the solutions is to comply with new policies and help reassure fans that it is safer to return to live sporting events.
Honeywell’s Healthy Buildings solutions can: • Help minimise contamination risks • Monitor physical environments • Monitor occupant behaviour • Address indoor air quality concerns • Improve business continuity • Increase control of health, safety and security factors
• Help sustain compliance to new standards, regulations and guidelines
Additionally, Honeywell’s Healthy Buildings solutions provide a holistic view of a building’s health based on factors such as air quality, occupant flow, thermal temperature screening, people flow and people counting, social distancing and mask detection monitoring. This data can be accessed via a bespoke dashboard to provide insight into the overall health of a building.
Taking this broader view of occupant welfare allows fans to focus on what’s important – the action on the field – with the confidence that appropriate measures are in place so they can enjoy the game. During these unusual times, watching sports teams take to the field can help people feel a small sense of normality. We’re proud to work with sports teams, leagues and stadiums across the world to help their mission of providing a safer environment.
BSEE
We’re already delivering the benefits. The Spectrum Center – home to the Charlotte Hornets NBA basketball team – has deployed Honeywell’s Healthy Building Dashboard to provide insights into air quality, temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide and other pollutants.
The Tactics
The Honeywell survey was conducted by Censuswide among 2,000 sports fans in the UK, between 3rd - 9th March, 2021, using an
online survey. Sports fans are defined as those who have visited big stadiums to watch sporting events prepandemic. Censuswide abide by and employ members of the Market Research Society which is based on the ESOMAR principles. Results of any sample are subject to sampling variation. The magnitude of the variation is measurable and is affected by the number of responses and the level of the percentages expressing the results.
