he Federation of Environmental Trade Associations (FETA) is delighted to announce that Mike Nankivell has been awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to the UK Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry.

With almost 50 years of experience in the HVACR industry, Nankivell has served as President of the Heat Pump Association (HPA), President of HEVAC and as Chairman of FETA during its 30th anniversary year. In the wider industry he is also a Fellow and former Trustee of the Institute of Refrigeration (IoR) and has served as a Director of the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Industry Board (ACRIB).

Russell Beattie, Chief Executive of FETA said: “It was an absolute pleasure for FETA to nominate Mike, with support from other key stakeholders in the industry, for an honour. Mike epitomises the very best of the volunteer culture which exists within Trade Associations and his personal commitment to the entire HVACR industry is second to none.”

One of his many achievements was as Chair of the ACRIB F Gas Implementation Group from 2005 to 2020 where his role saw him voluntarily acting as an industry advisor to DEFRA and the Environment Agency. He was responsible for the UK industry response to the F Gas regulations and his steadfast desire to pursue the very best

climate change driven solution for Europe is a demonstration of his commitment to every role which he has held. Commenting on being awarded an OBE, Nankivell said: “I am proud, grateful and equally humbled that my work within an industry that I love has been recognised in this amazing way. Throughout my long career within the HVACR industry I have had the privilege to work with a number of incredible people and I would like to pay tribute to each and every one of them as they are the ones who have made this possible.”

designer, Emma Forrest from Kitchens InStyle talked to Simon Acres from her beautiful showroom on the edge of the New Forest in Cadnam, Hampshire. Forrest began her career after completing a degree in design, then spending time with a large retailer before moving to the luxury showroom, Kitchens Instyle.

She says, “I gained some great experience in my first role but wanted to move onto a position where I could build a closer relationship with my clients and have the creativity to follow a more design led approach.

“I have been lucky to benefit from plenty of training, taking advantage of all the online courses offered by manufacturers, as well as learning whilst working in the showroom and dealing with customers. It is wonderful to be in a position where we can welcome customers back in the showroom, as it gives us more time to spend with them and build a rapport, as well as providing an opportunity to touch and feel the products.

“Business is good as people have spent so much time at home, it has made them understand better what they want from

their living spaces. Most customers are looking to bring the kitchen into the heart of the home with space for living, entertaining and socialising.

“It is even more important than ever to try and establish a budget early on, as customers may have been researching online before they come into the showroom. I will be direct so I know what I am working with, I can then be ready to offer alternative products but still provide the look they want.

“I am excited about the future, with so many innovations in appliances and products and the move towards sustainability, kitchen design has many more challenges ahead.”

Vaisala listed highly in Financial Times’ Climate Leaders 2021

he Financial Times has listed 300 European Climate Leaders 2021. The list includes European companies that achieved the greatest reduction in their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions between 2014 and 2019. Vaisala is proud to be near the top of the list. Vaisala, a global leader in weather, environmental, and industrial measurements, is ranked 14th on the Financial Times list of 300 European climate leaders. Climate change is turning into an ever more crucial challenge for our planet, and with this study the Financial Times underlines great achievements but also encourages companies to do more.

“It is a great honour to be included on the top of Financial Times’s Climate Leaders list, and it is a result of consistent and excellent work on reducing our own carbon footprint. We can see that the climate situation is getting more urgent, creating a chain of environmental, societal, and economic impacts on our planet. This calls also for actions from the private sector to step up and be a key driver of change in the transition to a low- carbon economy,” says Kai Öistämö, President and CEO, Vaisala.

during the years 2014–2019 or total reduction of GHG emissions in the same timeframe. Vaisala’s figures on these scales are 37.3% (average per year) and 86.9% (total) respectively. The great reduction is largely due to the fact that Vaisala has worked towards using 100% renewable electricity and achieved this target in 2020.

The Financial Times’ study takes into account Scope 1 and 2 emissions, meaning those emissions directly produced by a company itself and those produced in generating the energy used by the company. Other parts of the value chain, such as suppliers and product use, are left out.

“We have taken great measures to reduce our carbon footprint continuously, and if we look at our latest figures from last year, they surpass even the 86.9% in the Financial Times’ list. In 2020, our total reduction of core emissions from the 2014 baseline was actually 94%. Sustainability really is at the core, and it is visible not only in our own operations but throughout the value chain. We place expectations on our suppliers so that they act according to our sustainability standards. Also, the net impact of our solutions is demonstrably positive: the greatest impact of our products stems from our product use,” explains Marjo Hietapuro, Sustainability Manager, Vaisala.
