EDITOR’S COMMENT & CONTENTS Remembrance and Reformation
A
s the heat has finally hit full-force, reassuring us all that Summer is actually here, there are more than a couple of serious considerations to be made in the building services sector and construction as a whole. This issue’s Air Conditioning, Cooling & Ventilation feature looks at how we can make our buildings as comfortable as possible as temperatures rise while keeping a stern eye on reducing negative impact on the environment and ensuring the healthiest kind of air flow while we wait to see which way the pandemic turns.
The 14th June marked the fourth anniversary since the catastrophic events of Grenfell Tower in London and another moment that threw the limelight on outdated and neglectful attitudes in construction. At the anniversary event, survivors
paid their respects to those who couldn’t stand beside them, looking up at the tower which was lit up in green (the colour of the Grenfell for Justice campaign) for all to see. Churches across London, including St Paul’s, rang their bells 72 times for those who lost their lives in the fire. While lockdown easing was delayed, there are hints being made that parts of life as we knew it pre-pandemic are now so changed, they are unlikely ever to return to the way they were. One newspaper suggested that Ministers may give workers a legal right to remain working-from- home once the lockdown is completely lifted, looking at the environmental, financial and health benefits this has created so far. Meanwhile, BESA has said that they expect some of the changes made by the building services sector to cope with Coronavirus to become permanent.
