PostCOVID19 industry ready to take on netzero challenge
D
uring the COVID-19 crisis, manufacturers have proven they can work in new, more sustainable ways. As industry looks to rebuild and grow after the lockdown, there is an opportunity for manufacturers to refocus on their sustainability goals and work with Government to deliver a green recovery.
Research, undertaken by Make UK and leading energy company E.ON prior to the lockdown showed that sustainability and profitability go hand in hand: manufacturers who put sustainability at the heart of their businesses have seen real benefits from doing so in the last 12 months with 40% reporting increased profit margins and 30% increased competitiveness as a result.
The report, Towards a net-zero carbon UK manufacturing sector, takes the temperature of sustainability and energy efficiency progress in manufacturing and shows that 90% of manufacturers are aware of the 2050 net-zero target while almost half see this as a business opportunity which they are grasping as the roadmap to sustainable growth once the world opens up again.
Before COVID-19 and the global impacts hit, 30% said they have made real inroads into energy efficiency investments in the last 12 months, with the majority of the changes in relation to building improvement, equipment and manufacturing processes. Improving the energy efficiency of buildings was the second most impactful of technical measure for 11% of companies and was seen as a relatively simple step to take in the net-
zero journey. Other simple measures which did not require major investments included buying energy from renewable sources, switching to LED lighting and control or replacing outdated equipment such as fans and pump systems.
Stephen Phipson, CEO Make UK, the manufacturers’ organisation, said “These results show that manufacturers are committed to playing their part in the transition to a net-zero carbon economy. As businesses recover and learn from the COVID-19 crisis, they have the opportunity to ensure improved sustainability is factored into their resilience plans.
“As well as taking steps to reduce energy use and CO2 emissions, they are developing the innovative new products and services we all need to decarbonise. With the right policy and regulatory environment manufacturers
could move even more quickly to unlock the benefits of green growth, and we look forward to working in partnership with Government, regulators and the energy industry to make that happen as part of the future new norm.”
Michael Lewis, CEO, E.ON UK added, “Both Government and the energy industry must work to remove barriers to further investment as reported by manufacturers, notably cashflow and profit margin impacts, as well as payback periods on investments. The COVID-19 crisis has demonstrated that collaboration and cooperation across government, industry and society can transform how our economy operates and we must now work together to deliver a green recovery which continues the transition to a low-carbon economy but also makes economic sense.”
BPMA Relaunches Skills Development Websites T
he British Pump Manufacturers Association (BPMA) – the organisation which represents the business interests of UK and Irish suppliers of liquid pumps and related pumping equipment - has refreshed and relaunched two of its dedicated skills development websites.
In line with recommendations presented to the BPMA Council, and following full acceptance of those proposals, the BPMA's E-Learning and Certified Pump Systems Auditors (CPSA) websites have been updated and brought into line with the main BPMA website. The changes include easier access for users, a simpler, more intuitive online experience and greater synergy with the BPMA’s overall corporate identity.
These updates have now been completed and can be viewed and enjoyed by following the links shown below:

SWEP Sealix® is approved by WRAS S
WEP’s Sealix® range of Brazed Plate Heat Exchangers (BPHEs), have been formally approved by WRAS – the Water Regulations Advisory Scheme. BPHEs are one of the most efficient ways to transfer heat.
WRAS checks the testing of thousands of water fittings products to ensure they comply with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations and Scottish Byelaws. The water fittings regulations protect drinking water supplies within plumbing systems in homes, businesses and other properties.
SWEP Sealix® BPHEs keep tap water applications running efficiently for longer. This is achieved with SWEP Sealix® coating, a revolutionary SiO₂- based thin-film technology that increases BPHE corrosion resistance, protects against fouling and scaling and increases durability.
The protective Sealix® layer is applied to all inner surfaces of the heat exchangers in most of the HIUs and substations that encounter drinking water, to increase the lifetime and the operational safety of the entire system. This in turn reduces maintenance costs and unplanned downtime.

“We are delighted that SWEP Sealix® has been formally approved by WRAS for the UK market. WRAS take a rigorous approach to testing and their product approval was not easy to achieve. The approval reinforces our message to customers that SWEP Sealix® will help save them money and improve their efficiency.”
