As a result, the NHBC now requires test evidence showing that recessed downlights are suitable for a similar I­joist and plasterboard combination. Ovia has successfully completed further fire resistance testing to demonstrate that its fire­ rated downlights satisfy the new guidelines issued by the NHBC. The testing was carried out by Efectis ­ a major player in fire science, covering all fire safety expertise in testing and modelling, certification and inspection around the world.


For many years the market for fire­rated downlights has been the cause of some confusion, with many manufacturers making claims but not always having the technical data to back up these claims. The NHBC guidance on the use of fire­ rated downlights makes it very clear that only correctly tested products can be used in the type of floor construction in which they are being fitted. Generally, a press fit is the fastening of two parts – in this case, inserting a pipe into a fitting by normal force, with the interference holding both parts in place. Each press fitting is equipped with an o­ring inserted into the bead. This is then tightly pressed together in an exact, easy and reliable process with a hydraulic pressing tool. Different o­rings are used for drinking water, gas or high­temperature application. Even though the pressing process is relatively simple, suppliers such as SANHA provide technical seminars or on­site training and certification for installers switching to the press­fit technique or in need of additional personal training. These include topics such as the physics behind press­fit technology, standards and norms, pipework design considerations to prevent for example stagnation, or the advantages of different materials (but can expand on any content required).
