n response to the recent announcement that the government plans to introduce a tougher regulatory system for building safety, the Smoke Control Association (SCA) has voiced its full support for the proposed programme of reform. In order to implement the recommendations made by Dame Judith Hackitt, James Brokenshire, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, outlined in a statement that the government “wants the new regulatory structure to draw on the expertise of key existing regulators: the HSE, fire and rescue authorities, and local authority building control” – a joined up approach welcomed by the SCA and its members.

As part of the new approach, the government will establish a ‘Joint

Regulators Group’ to assist with the transition to a stronger regulatory framework and part of this group’s remit will be to assess the resource needs of the future regulator, including working with approved inspectors to ensure there are sufficient inspectors with the necessary experience and expertise.

David Mowatt, chairman of the SCA, commented: “The SCA has long argued for changes to the current regulations and is encouraged by the government’s strong stance in committing to a programme of reform that will deliver on all of the recommendations laid out in Dame Judith Hackitt’s report.

“The SCA will continue to work with other industry bodies on improving standards and offers its support to the government in developing minimum standards for third-party certification

schemes for fire protection products essential to building safety, as well as encouraging the use of third-party certified fire safety products essential to building safety.”

Russell Beattie, chief executive of the Federation of Environmental Trade Associations (FETA), parent body to the SCA, added: “FETA welcomes the announcement by the Secretary of State for Communities concerning taking forward the Hackitt Review. We fully endorse the need for clearer standards and guidance and recognise that industry has a key role to play in this.”

New CIBSE accredited district heating CPD training course launched by Bosch

B

osch Commercial and Industrial has gained Continuing

Professional

Accreditation (CPD) approval by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) for its ‘Heat Network Design Considerations’ CPD training course.

With the decarbonisation of the UK’s domestic heating network a governmental priority, a well-designed

district heating scheme could play a crucial role in cutting carbon emissions. The CIBSE-approved CPD course from Bosch, aimed at investors, contractors and designers, covers a multitude of district heating topic areas with specific attention placed on low-carbon design considerations. The new training course explores topics such as domestic hot water (DHW) requirements, calculating flow rates and selecting pipe sizes, and hints and tips on refining the design of a heat network.

Focusing specifically on the design of small and medium sized heat networks, the course considers sizing principles for incorporating renewable and low carbon heat sources such as solar thermal and heat pump technologies.

As a result of the course’s CIBSE CPD status, it will now count towards a delegates CIBSE CPD requirement. Pete Mills, technical

SRIA has announced it has extended the scope of its UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) accredited testing services, which now includes the latest version of the BESA UK HIU Test Regime: October 2018. The accreditation follows the announcement that BSRIA became a BESA approved laboratory in accordance with the above mentioned standard in October, as well as BSRIA attaining UKAS accreditation to the December 2016 version of the test regime in January of this year. The timing of the

accreditation fits in neatly with the release of the District Energy & Network Components study by BSRIA’s WMI department. The study highlights the latest updates and developments in district heating and cooling. Along with the components of heat networks, both in the energy centre and the distribution network, including heat interface units and heat meters. These include detailed segmentation, evolving technology,

forecast, market share information and main drivers. Tom Garrigan, business manager, BSRIA Test House, (pictured above) said: “Further extending the scope of our UKAS accreditation ensures we are fully compliant with the latest requirements to carry out testing in accordance with the October 2018 version of the BESA UK HIU test regime. This testing activity dovetails neatly with our other product testing, consultancy and market intelligence services, whilst also meeting the growing demand for increased laboratory-based performance data and market data for this technology type.”

operations manager at Bosch Commercial and Industrial (pictured left), said: “With around eight million people predicted to receive their heat from a heat network by 2030 and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) confirming that they will invest £320 million of public funds to support heat networks, now is the time to lead with a low-carbon, user- first design philosophy. “Our CPD course will provide investors,

contractors and designers with valuable knowledge, practical experience and the skills needed to maximise the performance of a heat network.” Find out more by downloading Bosch Commercial and Industrial’s white paper, ‘or contact your nearest BDM for more information via: https://www.bosch-
