Smart buildings need smart planning

mart buildings must begin with smart planning and designers must play their part by considering connectivity at the beginning of the design process. That was the foundation of a talk on ‘Building

Better Buildings Through Connectivity’ given by Spencer Allen, GEZE UK’s National Sales Manager for Window Technology, which took place at the Smart Building Show, London. Placing people at the heart of design, construction,

operations and development decisions, will in turn create “added value” by boosting productivity and generating costsavings in human resources and building management, he outlined. Controlling a building’s systems – its heating,

lighting, ventilation, air conditioning or other application, will offer improved efficiency, reduction in energy consumption and an extended life cycle of products used throughout the building. But the greatest return on investment could be seen by providing better workplaces for its occupiers, he stated. A staggering 90 per cent of an organisation’s

expenditure is spent on its people – by way of salaries, ‘oncosts’ and benefits compared with only 10 per cent spent on operations and energy consumption. “The need to look after our people is evident,” he said. “Maintaining the health and satisfaction of employees will result in a greater return on a significant investment in any organisation’s running costs.” For more information about GEZE UK’s

www.geze.co.uk 2018 was a roaring success A

t the beginning of 2018, there were very few

expectations that the year would turn out to be a memorable one for English football fans. However, as soon as the whistle blew in Russia on the world’s most watched sporting tournaments, the expectations along with the temperature, rose dramatically. Within the venues

that were spread across 1,800 miles and 12 arenas, many of which were purpose built, were a total of 859 Grundfos pumps. These units quietly played their part in the unfolding drama by delivering essential services including the water supply, ventilation, irrigation and drainage, cooling and fire protection. Losing to Croatia in the semi

finals was painful, but this has been somewhat redressed when England beat them at Wembley

(another Grundfos supported venue) to reach the final stages of the UEFA National League that will be played in June. Grundfos are delighted to be

playing their part at these and many major sporting locations, both at home and abroad, to find out more about these venues as well as the wide range of pump products and solutions visit:

Indoor air quality monitoring eases staff concern

A

s a Health Safety and Environmental Consultant, Matthew Brown is often asked to

investigate indoor air quality because of its effects on staff health and performance. In a recent project, in response to health complaints in an office complex containing 800 people, he rented a TSI QUEST EVM7 instrument, one of the latest air quality monitors from Ashtead Technology. “In the past, it would have been necessary to operate several instruments simultaneously,” Matthew explains. “But the QUEST monitors multiple parameters, so the investigation work was quicker and easier.” The QUEST EVM7 monitored Temperature, Relative Humidity, Air

Velocity, Particulates, CO2, VOCs and a toxic gas. Monitoring data were compared with workplace exposure limits and were found to be acceptable; however, CO2 levels rose during the day. Commenting on the advantages provided by the QUEST EVM7,

Matthew says: “I know that Ashtead offers this instrument for sale, but for me it was more costeffective to rent the unit for this small project. “The instrument arrived clean, calibrated and ready for immediate use with an easytouse startup procedure, and we were able to present a very professional report; appeasing the concerns of staff and recommending future actions for management to demonstrate defensible processes.”

more robust switch than most other products on the market. The switches are split into four categories

each containing both threepin and fourpin connections. Threepin switches have common clock and switch connections. This means that the same 230V ac live supply used to run the clock is also used as the live input for the switching circuit.

Densostrip™ used on refurbished Ross Fountain

A

s part of a recently completed £1.5million project to refurbish the historic Ross Fountain in Edinburgh, Winn Coales (Denso) Ltd

supplied Densostrip™ and Densostrip Primer™ to provide a permanently watertight seal between precast concrete units. These precast units form the trenches which house the underground supply of services to the fountain and were both supplied and installed by Creagh Concrete Products. The yearlong restoration project on the new

foundations and waterworks (under the Ross Development Trust) now enables the fountain to operate for the first time in years. Industrial Heritage Consulting Ltd were the project managers on the fountain conservation works.

Entering into the spirit of energy savings

are any areas that will help them to improve their operation, they approached Grundfos Pumps to review the pump related energy efficiency at their plant. Having undertaken an initial energy check, Grundfos identified several areas where significant pump related savings were possible. Taking the advice offered, two new boiler feed support pumps were purchased, and their

performance was measured over a 6 month period. The initial results showed electrical savings of £56k pa; the removal of the modulation valve saved £18k per boiler on maintenance costs; a reduction in breakdown and/or steam issues on site; improved steam quality and well as gas savings of up to 9%, all

of which has meant a very short payback in terms of ROI. Grants have been so impressed with the results that there is a now planned schedule of Grundfos based pumps improvements in place. changes have been made to some of the flow rates and supply temperatures at the outlets. For example, the supply temperature at the kitchen sink has been reduced from the previous 60C to 55C, which is in line with the delivery temperature that was selected for the majority of Heat Networks, during the last year. Evinox comment on changes to Hot Water Services in NHBC Standards for 2019

setting standards for registered builders and working to help improve the construction quality of the homes they build. They recently announced the launch of their 2019 Standards, which will become effective from 1st January 2019. The standards apply to all properties with foundations laid on or after that date. enable district and communal heating system flow temperatures to be reduced, something which is especially important for the growth of 4th Generation Heat Networks in the UK. In addition, the lowered DHW temperature combined with the new table in the NHBC standard for simultaneous hot water use, will give design engineers the confidence to reduce the kW demand for individual properties, something which will improve both efficiency and cost of UK Heat Networks.” Helen continued, “whilst we
