EDITOR’S COMMENT & CONTENTS Heat network trend picking up steam

H

eat networks have been on the rise in recent years largely due to their energy efficiency and environmental benefits. They use a centralised heat source to provide heating and hot water to multiple buildings or homes allowing for the efficient generation and distribution of heat. This ultimately leads to lower energy consumption and reduced greenhouse gas emissions when compared with alternative heating systems. According to the Association of Decentralised

Energy, there are over 14,000 heat networks in the UK of which 91 per cent are located in England and six per cent in Scotland.

And it is widely accepted that to decarbonise buildings and reach Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050, heat networks are set to play an even more important role in the supply of low-carbon heat to

homes, non-domestic buildings and the public sector. While heat networks, also known as district heating,

offer great efficiency benefits, it’s even better if there is a possibility to make them even more efficient – something that can be achieved through the use of Digital Twins. On pg 14 of this issue Insite Energy offers some insight into how to achieve razor-sharp insight into heat network performance with the ability to cut emissions by up to 40 per cent. The seaside town of Worthing, West Sussex, is a good example of UK heat network in the works, which is pledging to offer climate-friendly heating to every building in the town by 2050. See more on 16. Heat Networks are also sure to feature at the next Building Services Forum on November 28 at the Building Centre in London. Visit bseeforum.co.uk Heather Ramsden, Editor
