he Heat Pump Association (HPA) has expressed its disappointment and frustration following news that the delay in bringing in the vital Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) reforms will now extend beyond the summer. The reforms have suffered a number of delays and setbacks due to procedural formatting issues and the snap general election and subsequent changes to Government have altered the delivery timeframe once more.

Mike Nankivell, President of the HPA, comments: “This prolonged process of reform could potentially damage the renewable heat industry, creating uncertainty and confusion over tariffs in both domestic and non- domestic markets.
“Although we are once again left frustrated by the delays, we recognise that when the changes are finally implemented there will likely be a silver lining in the form of significantly improved tariffs. In addition, any installations registered

from 12th December 2016 up until the new regulations are introduced will not be subject to heat demand limits but will be eligible for any improved tariffs, allowing operators to maximise the potential of their systems until the changes come into force.” The RHI is an incentivised scheme designed to promote the use of renewable heat and help the UK reduce its carbon emissions in line with EU energy targets. The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) is expected to provide an update on the proposed reform following Parliament’s summer recess. The HPA will continue to support the overall objectives of the RHI and is on hand to advise BEIS when needed.

live office refurbishment will provide environmental and human data as evidence for positive health and wellbeing impacts on office occupants
A
BRE’s Biophilic Office refurbishment project will provide quantified evidence on the benefits of biophilic design on health, well- being and productivity of office occupants. The project centres on a 650sq m 1980s’ office building on the BRE campus in Watford, which will be refurbished using biophilic design principles.
Media Director: Kathy Ambrose
BRE are partnering with architect and interior designer Oliver Heath, who will lead on the design element of the refurbished building.
“The project will show how quantified improvements in productivity and wellness can bring rewards for landlords, occupiers, developers and all those concerned with the office and wider built environment,” says Ed Suttie, Research Director at BRE.

Cabling installed in data centres performed better than the LAN market increasing by 1.9 per cent compared to a flat (0.2 per cent) LAN segment. The cabling share installed in data centres remained in line with 2014 and 2015 at 20 per cent with 80 per cent being installed in LAN applications. Lone Hansen, WMI
Manager – I.T. Cable Group, BSRIA, said: “The forecast for
2017 – 2018 is positive with expected market growth of just over three per cent each year, followed by a dip in 2019. LAN is expected to grow by almost three per cent in 2017 and 2018, while cabling installed in data centres should increase by four – five per cent in 2018 and 2019.”
The commoditisation of cabling with increasing sales of solutions sold by low cost supplier and distributors’ private labels continued in 2016. The low cost solutions mainly operate in the Cat 5e and Cat 6 day-to-day and small project segment, but some are increasingly focusing on Cat 6A and fibre products and larger projects. im Hopkinson has been elected President of the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) for 2017/18. The Managing Director of ductwork manufacturer and installation contractor E Poppleton and Son succeeds Malcolm Thomson. Hopkinson, who has been working in the building engineering sector for 35 years, is the third

Association President from Poppleton. He follows in the footsteps of Gareth Vaughan, who was President of what was then the HVCA in 2008/9, and also the founder’s grandson Edgar Poppleton, who served in 1988/89. The company, which is based in
Colwyn Bay, has been a member of the Association for almost 60 years.
Mr Hopkinson said the main focus of his year as BESA President would be to “drive emerging talent into our industry” and empower young people to set the agenda for the Association’s future. He added that he would be unveiling a major new initiative at the annual BESA President’s Lunch in
September that would set a new direction for the sector’s “future leadership”.
This would also be part of an effort to raise the profile and status of the building engineering profession and make careers in the industry more attractive to young people.
