BSEE Covid ‘Roadmap’ Pushes CSA
ollowing the UK Government’s recently announced ‘roadmap’ to the lifting of its COVID-19 restrictions, the CSA, and its event organiser, Touchwave Media, have once again been forced to postpone the 2020/21 CSA Awards Ceremony, hitherto planned for the evening of Thursday 10th June 2021. Having already moved the event from its original date in June 2020, it is very much hoped that the proposed timeline mapped out by the Prime Minister, will indeed deliver the eagerly anticipated relaxation of the current rules.
However, with caution being the watchword over the coming months, whilst the vaccine roll-out continues apace and public confidence develops, the event has now been rescheduled to the evening of Thursday 11th November 2021. The Guoman Tower Hotel in London will be retained as the venue for this special evening of reward and celebration.

Baxi Heang appoints Heat Pump Business Development Manager
Baxi Heating UK and Ireland has appointed specification specialist Ryan Kirkwood to the role of Heat Pump Business Development Manager. The move is part of the company’s continuous improvement and development strategy, ensuring it is well prepared for the future as the heating industry makes the transition towards zero carbon and sustainable solutions, and to meet the changing needs of its customers.
Ryan joined the business in 2013 as an area sales manager in Scotland, looking after specification and sales of Remeha gas boilers, biomass boilers and CHP. He explains why he is excited by his new role: “My passion has always been sustainable design. Heat pumps are one of the key technologies we must use properly to ensure our homes and businesses are sustainable in the future. “My background is in mechanical design engineering and building simulation. I’ve worked closely with contractors and consultants over the last 10 years and consider myself to be an absolute geek when it comes to functional design and helping to maximise system performance. Over the years I have seen the good, bad and ugly with both design and installation, and have learned from what I’ve seen.
“I am really looking forward to the dynamic aspect of evolving solutions for heating and hot water in the future. No one method works for all building types; the solution must be tailored for each and this is the real challenge. Heat pumps are one of the key technologies that will help us to a more sustainable future. We cannot ignore how important heat networks are in our drive for affordable, low carbon heating and hot water. And we are making important developments with hydrogen. Having a blended solution of both heat pumps and hydrogen boilers in the future may be one of the best ways of delivering sustainable heating solutions. “I love helping our customers deliver conceptual and innovative ideas. Innovation is the key to making all the future carbon targets a reality. We must ensure we have innovative solutions for today’s challenges while developing future solutions for tomorrow,” Ryan concludes. When he’s not working, Ryan enjoys paragliding and building things – anything from model aeroplanes to off-road touring vehicles.

Actuate UK calls for Budget to support a sustainable engineering services sector
E
ngineering services alliance Actuate UK has called on the Chancellor to use the upcoming Budget to confirm the Government’s commitment to a green economic recovery with incentives that support positive changes to the sector.
Actuate UK wants the forthcoming Budget to be the basis for long-term, comprehensive and simple to access support for energy efficiency related work for homes and buildings. In addition, the alliance would like Government to use their power as a major procurer to reward businesses who demonstrate good practice and support skills development and quality in the sector.
Actuate UK is calling on the Treasury in the upcoming Budget to: • Reduce VAT to at least 5% or zero for energy efficient products and ensure there is clear, unambiguous application and guidance from HMRC for the use of this reduced rate.
• Release all the original Green Homes Grant funding, ensuring the full £2 billion is available until March 2022. And act swiftly to resolve the administration problems with the scheme based on current feedback.
The industry believes in order to meet the Government’s climate goals long- term commitment and planning is needed. This should include achievable and enforceable changes to drive consumer behaviour.
Actuate UK would like to see Government use its purchasing power in infrastructure development to:
• Reward engineering services businesses that adhere to public sector procurement guidelines, such as the Construction Playbook, and especially businesses that adopt direct employment in the sector and support the skills and training of their workforce. Actuate UK welcomes
implementation of IR35 reforms in the private sector from 6 April as an important step in promoting direct employment and closing down one route to illegitimate avoidance of tax and national insurance contributions. However, it adds: • We ask for urgent clarification from HMRC on scope of the terms ‘supervision, direction or control’ under the 2014 intermediaries’ legislation. And to confirm that avoidance of the IR35 reforms by this means shall be deemed unlawful, void and to no effect. We are increasingly concerned by widely publicised claims from tax advisers and employment intermediaries that skilled ‘self- employed’ personnel can simply be switched back from personal service companies to engagement via payroll companies and other intermediaries based on an unduly narrow interpretation of “supervision, direction or control”.
Birmingham-based mechanical and electrical building services specialist J S Wright has appointed Darrell Mitchell as its new Human Resources Manager. With 25 years of experience in senior HR roles, Mitchell was previously an HR consultant writing and delivering his own online management training courses. Before that he spent five years leading the HR function for the maintenance and development teams of a large housing, maintenance and care company.
His varied experience also includes a five-year stint as HR Manager for the Royal Shakespeare Company and a 20-year career in the Prison Service. Mitchell said: “I am looking forward to supporting J S Wright’s board and associate directors in developing and managing the company’s HR systems and processes as the company continues to expand and diversify, as well as helping all its employees to achieve their career goals.” He added: “The HR development strategy will fit closely with J S Wright’s values of integrity, loyalty and quality, and its collaborative and supportive culture.”
Klober Appoints New Commercial Director
With 45% of construction companies anticipating a rise in output during the year ahead, according to an IHS Markit survey, Klober’s timely appointment of Chris Nicholls as Commercial Director will help the leading roofing and ventilation component manufacturer to meet contractor demand for advice and project support in 2021 and beyond.
Pressure to build new homes at a higher volume and speed, alongside the growing home refurbishment market, including loft conversions, side and rear extensions, means that the appointment of Nicholls comes at a time where roofing guidance and project support is in even greater demand.
Nicholls brings 17 years’ commercial and residential building sales expertise to the role, and at Klober he will be tasked with leading the customer and sales teams. His experience in developing sales strategy and delivering a forward-thinking and customer focused approach, will ensure that construction companies are provided with industry-leading service and support. He will also be responsible for identifying new opportunities for Klober to work with customers.
SES Engineering Services strengthens midlands bid team
SES Engineering Services (SES), has bolstered its work-winning team in the Midlands and South West, with the strategic appointment of a new pre- construction manager.
Lisa Beaman will be responsible for securing high-profile mechanical and electrical (M&E) projects which support SES’ growth in key sectors including pharmaceutical and education, as well as strengthen the firm’s expertise in delivering technically complex builds across the region. She will be based primarily in SES’ Birmingham office, and joins with more than 20 years’ experience in the engineering industry. She has previously held national business development roles at firms including Balfour Beatty, WSP and Imtech Engineering Services. Throughout her career, Lisa has been an advocate of encouraging more women into the construction industry and has sat as Midlands Chair for the National Association of Women in Construction, been an active member of Women in Property, and provided mentoring for a number of women over the years.
