125 years of engineers supporting engineers

From Foothold, the charity founded by engineers, for engineers

This autumn marked 125 years since we made our first grant. It was for £20 (£2,500 in today’s money), given to an engineer named Charles Capito.

He’d written papers on electrical engineering and mechanics, but at some point, life threw him a curveball. We don’t know exactly what happened, but we do know that he needed support.

Some of the era’s prominent engineers were among our early donors. They made that first grant possible, and allowed Foothold to become the charity it is today.

Their donations showed how vital they felt it was to support fellow engineers during difficult times.

We’re still here, supporting engineers.

We’ve expanded our support to offer free online tools for the whole engineering community, to help you stay well, plan ahead, and take control of your circumstances.

Explore the support available to you at www.myfoothold.org.
