ABB’s UK Engineering Centre doubles in size to meet rising demand

A

BB has doubled the size of its UK Engineering Centre to tackle demand for servicing variable speed drives (VSDs), developing specialist test rigs (STRs) and customer training.

Floorspace at the site in Coalville, Leicestershire, is increased from 830 m2 to 1789 m2. The site houses the latest

ABB-certified workshop – one of 17 throughout the world - offering repairs and upgrades to low voltage AC and DC drives and medium voltage AC drives. The facility upgrades third party medium voltage drives, as well as those of ABB. “Many operators across multiple

industries are finding that their variable speed drives are no longer supported by the original vendor. ABB can integrate new variable speed drives and control platforms to these systems, ensuring operators can continue to benefit from their substantial investment in equipment,” says Stuart Melling, Business Unit Manager, ABB Drives UK. The new facility houses ABB’s STR business, for which a new class of test rig for electric vehicles, incorporating

battery simulators and electric chargers, is being developed. The location boasts the largest VSD training school in the UK, offering customers access to certified courses

covering low-, medium- and high-power drives. Coalville sees the introduction of the ABB AbilityTM Remote Support Centre. This enables global customers to

maximise uptime and optimise processes by having round-the-clock access to drive and automation experts who use cloud-based technologies for preventive and predictive maintenance.

Three ways to wire with addition of lever and push-button terminal blocks

I

nterconnection specialist WAGO introduces push-button

and lever-actuated variants to its TOPJOB S® terminal block family. Integrators can now choose between push-button, lever and push-in connection methods for additional flexibility on DIN rail installations.

The lever-actuated variant, a world first from WAGO, is equipped with a lever on the field side, and a push-button or operating tool-actuated connection on the factory side. The clamping point on the field side is opened and closed by hand using the lever, allowing

installers to tell at a glance which wires in an assembly are terminated. The lever can also be left open, freeing both hands to connect difficult-to-bend conductors with large cross sections.

Versions are available for nominal cross-sections of 2.5 mm², 6 mm² and 16 mm², and in 2- or 3-conductor configurations.

The clamping point of the push-button mechanism is opened with any screwdriver or similar operating tool. Feed- through terminal blocks with push-buttons are available for wire with a cross-section between 0.14 to 25 mm². The push-button terminal block is available in 2-, 3- or 4-conductor variants, which allow push-in connection of solid, seven strand and ferruled conductors.

Both the push button and lever actuators are orange in colour, making them clearly visible for easy identification.

Legrand premieres 13A socket with integrated USB Type-C outlet

W

ith end-user demand for high-speed charging continuing to grow, intensified by the number of

devices supported by USB Type-C, Legrand has unveiled what it believes to be one of the world’s first 13A two-gang sockets with both USB Type-A and Type-C charging outlets. USB Type-C devices have increased in popularity among

consumer electronics manufacturers in recent years, as they are a fraction of the size of standard Type-A outlets; are reversible, meaning they can be inserted into the fitting in any way; and offer a much higher power output compared to the predecessor. The Synergy USB socket can be installed in exactly the same way as a standard BS 13A socket and requires no additional wiring or installer accreditations, making it suitable for both new-build projects and retrofit installations. As well as a two-gang socket, the Synergy USB range includes a one-gang socket complete with a single USB Type-A charging outlet.
