confess that I didn’t know about the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero’s Solar Taskforce until the Electrical Contractors’ Association announced that its director of workforce and public affairs, Andrew Eldred, had been invited to join it. The Taskforce met for the first time in early July. ECA said the Taskforce represents an opportunity to recognise and support the important role of electricians and broader electrical skills for solar installations.
The association hope to see a renewed commitment to apprenticeships and high quality upskilling training for the country’s long term needs, including the ongoing maintenance of solar and other net zero technologies. The Solar Taskforce has been established to drive forward the actions needed by government and industry to meet the solar deployment ambition of 70 gigawatts by 2035. The taskforce will run up to February 2024, and its key objectives are: Strategic roadmap: assisting in the development of, and securing cross government and industry buy in to a UK roadmap for solar setting out a clear step by step deployment trajectory to achieve up to 70GW of solar by 2035 Taking action: government and industry working together to identify and drive forward processes and measures to unlock deployment
Securing investment and value for money: as the sector grows, put in place structures to facilitate continued progress on cost reduction and ensure investment in UK supply chains, jobs, skills, innovation and infrastructure is enabled sustainably.
ECA estimates the UK needs 12,000 new electrical starts every year just to keep up with sector demand and to replace those changing careers or retiring – it’s going to take a monumental effort to fill this void.
