SUPPLEMENT FEATURE CABLING & CABLE MANAGEMENT Driving innovation and sustainability

PVC4Cables is the European council of vinyl manufacturers’ platform dedicated to the PVC cables value chain

T

he organisation brings together the producers of PVC resins, stabilisers

and plasticisers, and PVC compounders. Participation is open to cable producers, recyclers and value chain associations. It intends to act as a driver for

environmentally responsible innovations in the PVC cables sector, and as a focal point for dialogue and communications with all stakeholders: cable producers, regulators, specifiers, installers, electricians, media and the general public. Accounting for about 46 per cent of the

cables market in Europe, PVC is the most used polymer for electric and telecommunication cables, thanks to its advantages in terms of best cost/performance ratio, high sustainability and recyclability. Wires and cables today represent the

largest application sector for flexible PVC in Europe, absorbing around seven per cent of the PVC resins manufactured.

  The main applications include: classic

electric cables for power transmission at low and medium voltage for homes and offices; telephone cables; coaxial cables for TV/computer/Hi-Fi; cables for cars; battery cables and robotics; data transmission cables, LAN and IT. In terms of sustainability, significant

progress has been made over past decades, thanks to the European PVC industry’s voluntary commitments, which contributed to the progressive reduction of energy and resources consumption, thus decreasing GHG (greenhouse gases) emissions; to the development of a new generation of PVC formulations, free of substances of high concern; and to the development of collection and recycling schemes. In 2018, in excess of 150,000 tonnes of

PVC were recycled from cables within the VinylPlus framework. New formulations for PVC cables are currently under

 

development to further improve their performance in fires. The second PVC4Cables Conference,

taking place in November in Berlin, will present and debate the state of the art on PVC cables and their numerous technical and functional benefits for users and consumers: from markets trends, standardisation, fire and smoke behaviour, to new life cycle assessment and total cost of ownership studies. Particular attention will be paid to innovation in additives and formulations and to PVC cable performance improvement. Participation to the conference is

free of charge, but online registration is required. The registration form, agenda and further information on the event will be available shortly on the PVC4Cables.org website.
