POWER PROJECT TRIUMPHS AT TECH AWARDS

H

ello and welcome to the June issue of Electrical Engineering.

This month, new rules are giving households the option of selling surplus solar power back to energy companies. This is great news for

homeowners who install solar roof panels from 1 January 2020, as they can lower their bills by selling energy to their supplier. Encouraging suppliers to competitively bid for electricity will give households the best market price for their energy, while providing the local grid with more clean, green energy, according to the government. This issue features an exclusive

interview with Eaton’s Mike Byrnes on UPS and the future of power management, along with the latest from the data centre, hazardous area equipment, and lighting and lighting control sectors. And keeping you up to date with

the latest in electrical vehicle charging, this issue includes the opportunities and challenges that this sector brings, according to Schneider Electric; a new EV charging range for the UK; and Rolec’s new solar EV charging unit. If you have any news to share, or

if your company is launching a new product, please get in touch on 01622 699194 or by emailing me at cwills@datateam.co.uk.

ARC FLASH BLAST HOSPITALISES WORKER

A

father of one is lucky to be alive after surviving an extreme arc flash blast that happened while

he was at work. Eddie Smith, 30, was working on site in his role as

team leader for construction firm, Clancy Docwra, when the jackhammer he was using to break ground hit a high voltage cable. Despite completing all safety checks, contact

with the voltage cable caused an arc flash, resulting in Smith suffering from burns to his hands, neck, mouth and nose. However, he managed to avoid life changing injuries thanks to the clothing he was wearing, as his employer had invested in specially designed ProGARM arc flash protective clothing (PPE). Since the incident, Smith has made a full recovery

A

joint project between UK Power Networks and National Grid ESO emerged a winner at the

National Technology Awards. The Power Potential project, a new service to

enable more distributed electricity generation across the South East of England, won IoT Project of the Year category. The project is a new initiative to open a

world-first reactive power market so generators connected to the UK Power Networks distribution network can provide services to National Grid. The major project to boost network capacity,

mostly through renewables, was announced in the summer of 2017 and has been designed to reduce the cost of connecting to the network. Power Potential is creating the technical and

commercial infrastructure for a world-first regional reactive power market. In the long-term, the project could save energy

customers over £400m by 2050 and generate an additional 3.72GW - equivalent to powering 1.8 million homes - in the South East of England. Rita Shaw, UK Power Networks project

manager for Power Potential, said, “This is excellent recognition for what has been and remains a real team effort with National Grid to benefit customers.”

and is now back to work. Eager to ensure others are made aware of the importance of wearing quality PPE, Smith, ProGARM and Clancy Docwra have created an educational video showcasing the importance of wearing PPE, and ProGARM is offering employers free consultations to offer advice to businesses looking to increase their employee protection against such risks.
