LEADING THE WAY ON REDUCING EMISSIONS
U
K Power Networks has become the first electricity network operator to achieve
the Carbon Trust Standard for Carbon. Achieving certification is a key step in the
company’s Green Action Plan, as it seeks to minimise its impact on the environment and help communities reach ‘net zero’ in line with the UK government’s target of net zero emissions by 2050. The Carbon Trust certified UK Power

oyal Mail Group has signed a deal with EDF in the UK to deliver electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure. This will support Royal Mail
Group’s commitment under the Optimise Prime Project – the world’s largest commercial electric vehicle project. The three-year framework will see EDF provide charging points,
associated maintenance and ancillary items such as signs, bollards and wheel stops. The initial scope for this agreement will see chargers installed on Royal Mail Group sites in the South East of England, with potential for this to increase as required. Choosing EDF as the framework provider of choice forms part of
Royal Mail Group’s commitment to sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint. The adoption of EVs across its business will play a key part in achieving its sustainability goals. Philippe Commaret, managing director for customers at EDF,
says: “The fact that the largest fleet operator in Europe has committed to such an ambitious project is a turning point in our journey to a low carbon future. Working with Royal Mail to install EV infrastructure at their UK sites will allow them to accelerate towards an electric future, and hopefully inspire other businesses to follow suit.”
Networks as having an absolute reduction of 6.6 per cent in carbon emissions since 2016/17. This is part of the company’s overall reduction of 20.5 per cent since the year against which it baselines, 2014/15. In its certification report, the Carbon Trust
has recognised that UK Power Networks has ‘a well-defined responsibility structure in place for carbon management which engages individuals at all levels of the organisation’. Working in partnership with local
organisations such as the Greater London Authority and Transport for London, UK Power Networks is developing smart ways to accelerate the transition to low carbon transport and improved air quality in London. There are nearly 60,000 electric vehicles already based in the company’s patch, approximately 30 per cent of the UK total. Phil Spiby, sustainability advisor at UK
Power Networks, said: “Although we’ve done a lot of work in the background, in many ways this certification is just the first stage of our journey.

.ON has announced it will be extending its 100 per cent renewables-backed electricity supply to eligible small business customers across Britain – committing to source electricity matched with wind, solar and other
sources for 100,000 or more small businesses over the next 12 months. E.ON already provides its residential customers electricity supply backed by 100 per cent renewable sources, acquiring a significant proportion of renewable electricity needs for customers’ homes through agreements with wind generators around the country, directly purchasing the electricity produced on behalf of customers. The remaining electricity used by all customers is matched with 100 per cent renewable electricity sourced externally.
