WELCOME W
elcome to the April issue of Electrical Engineering magazine.
I have written many times in this column about the skills shortage that is an on-going challenge for businesses of all sizes, but I think I’ve found something outside of this industry that shines a light on how our sector could attract new staff. Sunseeker International, the British luxury performance motor yacht brand, has launched a new training initiative to address a national skills shortage affecting the marine industry.
The Sunseeker Skills Academy, developed in partnership with Bournemouth and Poole College, is open to those seeking a career change.
It offers individuals the opportunity to undertake a fully paid, 12-week intensive boat-building course. Successful applicants will learn trade skills across five boat building specialisms, comprising carpentry, plumbing, composite bonding, engineering and electrical installations. Following an intensive training programme, students will join colleagues at the Sunseeker shipyards in Poole to further develop
competencies and achieve a nationally recognised qualification over 12 months.
Now, I don’t want to knock what Sunseeker International is doing, but if a luxury brand can offer engineering and electrical installations as part of a training course, what is our sector doing to bring new people in?
Sunseeker International is taking a proactive approach to address the UK-wide challenge in attracting and developing talent – in our sector, what are we doing? Partner with a college to bring on new people; yes it’s a gamble, but the challenge of recruit will remain if
