The Knowledge of London is the world’s most rigorous vocational training programme, forming the backbone of London’s iconic Black Cab trade for over a century. We support students in mastering London’s streets so they can become fully licensed, professional taxi drivers serving the capital to the highest standard.


Opportunities post-school and college


A career as a licensed London taxi driver offers something increasingly rare: independence,  exibility, and strong long-term earning potential without the need for traditional university debt. Through structured nowledge of London training, students gain a respected professional qualifi cation recognised worldwide. Trainees learn Londons streets, landmarks, routes, hotels, hospitals, and major venues through structured classroom learning, practical route studies, and one-to-one examinations known as appearances. Training typically takes around two years full-time, depending on pace and commitment. Part-time study will take longer. pon qualifi cation, drivers are licensed by TfL and can operate as self-employed professionals using either traditional black cabs or app-based platforms. The taxi badge is held for life, offering long-term fi nancial security and the option to pursue further education or alternative career paths if desired.

Many drivers earn , per year. tudents can apply at aged , hold a  provisional driving licence, and pass medical, B, and TfL background checks. o formal academic qualifi cations are required success is based on commitment, discipline, and perseverance.

We work closely with industry partners, potential sponsors, and support organisations to offer structured payment plans and sponsorship opportunities where available. Budgeting guidance is also provided during training. tudent wellbeing is taken seriously, with access to mentoring, peer support networks at LTA, and advice on maintaining both physical and mental health throughout the training journey.
