tarting university brings with it a host of mixed emotions. You’re likely to feel elated and excited, eagerly looking forward to what’s around the corner. But it can also be a daunting time – as any period of change can
be – with preparing to live away from home and family for the first time and assuming a number of responsibilities, from paying bills to food shopping, as well as making new friends. It’s natural to feel nervous, overwhelmed and anxious but it’s vitally important to recognise that you are not alone. Many others will feel the same as you do and there is plenty of support and resources available to help you look after your mental health and physical wellbeing. This doesn’t just apply to the start of your university journey but to every step of the way. An Office for Students report found that poor mental health can have a negative impact on students’ ability to participate in and complete their courses.
