ATIEL & UEIL Joint Sustainability Committee 10.6.3 Waste Oil Management

Provide training on the collection and separation of waste oil streams. Mixing different types of lubricants, such as oils containing PCBs or biodegradable oils, can render them unsuitable for recycling.

Dedicated waste oil containers should be used, and employees should be instructed on how to label and store these containers to prevent contamination and ensure proper disposal.

10.6.4 Leakage Prevention Programs

Train employees on how to reduce preventable waste through the use of closed systems and regular equipment maintenance checks. Implementing monitoring systems can alert operators when lubricants are degrading or leaking, allowing for early intervention.

10.6.5 Emergency Spillage Procedures

Create clear operating procedures and train staff on how to respond quickly in case of an emergency spillage. Ensure that employees are familiar with the location and use of absorbent materials and other emergency response tools.

By adopting these best practices for different lubricant applications, focusing on filled-for-life and total waste lubricants, and investing in comprehensive training programs, companies can significantly reduce the environmental impact of their lubricant use. These steps not only benefit the environment but also promote sustainability within the industry by extending the life cycle of lubricants, reducing waste, and enhancing recycling efforts. Furthermore, integrating digital platforms and ecodesign principles can further optimize EoL practices, providing customers with the tools and knowledge to engage in more sustainable behaviors.
