ATIEL & UEIL Joint Sustainability Committee 6 Waste Reduction

Reducing lubricant waste is essential to advancing sustainability within the lubricant industry, and it requires a comprehensive approach throughout the lubricant lifecycle, from production to end-of-life. Key best practices can include improving efficiency in production, enhancing recovery and recycling processes, and promoting responsible usage. For example, factories can implement waste minimization techniques such as:

• Optimizing production processes: Utilizing advanced monitoring and control technologies to minimize lubricant losses during manufacturing. Automated systems can help precisely manage lubricant flows, reducing spills and overuse.

• Waste stream separation: Establishing systems to separate hazardous from non- hazardous waste and facilitating the recycling of lubricants, packaging materials, and solvents used in production.

• Extending lubricant life: Encouraging the use of high-performance lubricants that extend service intervals, reduce the need for frequent lubricant changes, and lower the overall volume of waste.

• Closed-loop systems: Adopting closed-loop recycling systems for used lubricants. By collecting, filtering, and reusing lubricants within the production facility or offering re- refining services, companies can drastically reduce the amount of waste sent to disposal.

• Stakeholder engagement: Organizing community outreach programs to promote responsible lubricant disposal among customers and suppliers, and hosting cleanup events around plant locations to reduce environmental impact.

• Packaging innovation: Reducing waste by transitioning to bulk packaging or refillable containers, minimizing single-use plastics and other disposable materials.

By implementing these best practices, lubricant companies can play a critical role in reducing waste and enhancing environmental stewardship across the European market.
