ATIEL & UEIL Joint Sustainability Committee 5 Transparency

Transparency in the lubricants sector, particularly around end-of-life practices, is crucial for enhancing sustainability and fostering trust among customers, regulators, and stakeholders. To achieve this, lubricant companies can adopt several concrete best practices that promote transparency:

• Lifecycle assessments: Conduct and publicly share detailed lifecycle assessments (LCAs) that outline the environmental impacts of lubricant production, use, and disposal. This includes emissions, energy consumption, and resource use at each stage of the lifecycle.

• Product Carbon Footprint and Handprint reporting: Regularly calculate and disclose the Product Carbon Footprint and Handprint for all lubricant products, showing both the environmental costs and benefits of each product. Provide this information through clear, accessible labels or product documentation.

• Certification and eco-labels: Use third-party certification programs, such as the EU Ecolabel or other environmental standards, to validate the sustainability of lubricant products. Display these certifications prominently to build consumer trust.

• Clear end-of-life disposal guidelines:Offer explicit instructions for the proper disposal, recycling, or re-refining of used lubricants. This includes providing disposal locations, recycling partnerships, and services to customers, ensuring that used products do not contribute to environmental pollution.

Data transparency through digital platforms: Develop and maintain digital tools, such as customer portals or apps, that allow users to track the environmental performance of lubricants throughout their lifecycle, including data on waste reduction and recycling outcomes.

• Annual sustainability reports: Publish annual sustainability reports that outline a company's progress toward reducing environmental impacts, detailing specific waste reduction initiatives, energy-saving measures, and closed-loop recycling programs. Ensure these reports are accessible and understandable for all stakeholders.

By embracing these best practices, lubricant companies can strengthen their commitment to transparency, align with regulatory requirements, and position themselves as leaders in the transition to more sustainable business models within the European market.
