LASER MICRO DRILLING WORKSHOP REVIEW 2 OCTOBER 2025, HULL

At the beginning of October we held a workshop on micro drilling at a Hull University venue, adjacent to Luxinar. This topic was identified as of high interest and several sessions of ILAS were devoted to it in March this year.
Although a substantial amount of micro drilling is carried out using picosecond and femtosecond lasers, several of the presenters showed that there is still plenty of scope for nanosecond pulses and longer. There was also a strong focus on burst modes to achieve more from femtosecond lasers. Presenters were from laser source manufacturers (Luxinar, TRUMPF, Fluence and
EKSPLA), systems integration and application companies (Oxford Lasers, OpTek, Winbro and LASEA) and research organisations (Heriot Watt and MTC). With 40 delegates and 6 exhibitors, the event was an excellent networking opportunity.
In terms of the materials and markets for laser drilling, much of the content focused on glass drilling for semiconductor and electronics, medical device drilling and applications in aerospace and automotive as well as filtration for a range of industries.

applications lab at Luxinar, where a demonstration of live drilling and measurement via microscopes is used to connect customers directly to applications demonstrations without the need to travel.
After the workshop, half of the delegates went on a tour of the manufacturing plant at Luxinar, where the sealed CO2
manufactured.
