the golden era: the international rise
(1990-2010)
When talking about the history of Amnesia, these decades stand out as two of its most brilliant and explosive chap- ters—an era of musical fusion, a true revolution that defi- ned the heartbeat of Ibiza and, by extension, the pulse of global electronic music.
During these years, Amnesia became a sanctuary of mu- sical avant-garde, where the dancefloor was not just a space for entertainment but a temple of sonic purity. The most influential DJs of the time—from Sven Väth, Jeff Mills, Tiësto, and Richie Hawtin, to the younger talents who were just starting to make noise—took over the club’s stage with breathtaking sets, while the ceiling of the main room trembled under the bass waves.
The Cream party at Amnesia became a symbol of electro- nic culture in Ibiza, marking a before-and-after moment on the island during the ‘90s and 2000s. Born in the UK, Cream made Amnesia its Ibiza home in 1997, establishing itself as one of the most iconic clubbing experiences in history.
With world-renowned DJs like Paul van Dyk, Tiësto, and Pete Tong, Cream defined the electronic music scene, pro- viding the perfect platform for trance, house, and progres- sive sounds in a unique atmosphere. The vibe at Cream was magical, with the main room’s sound system and vi- sual effects creating an indescribable sensory experience. For many, Cream at Amnesia remains the very essence of the Ibizan spirit.
The 2000s at Amnesia were also marked by an unparalle- led collective energy and the birth of the legendary Cocoon. Founded by German DJ and producer Sven Väth—who re-
turns this year for a one-night special on May 18—Cocoon became synonymous with innovation and quality in Ibiza’s techno scene.
Cocoon remained true to its mission: a haven for true te- chno lovers, steering away from superficiality and com- mercialization. The sets of legendary artists like Ricardo Villalobos, Laurent Garnier, and Ben Klock defined the ma- gic of Cocoon, their deep and energetic sounds creating unforgettable dancefloor moments.
In 1992, Amnesia’s soul took a hit. The terrace—once a sa- cred place where music and sunrise merged into a single heartbeat—was forced to close due to noise regulations.
But Ibiza never surrenders. Amnesia adapted, reinventing the terrace while keeping its essence intact. Because here, music never dies—it just finds new ways to breathe.
This era was not just about high-quality music but also about a deep sense of belonging and community. Loyal fo- llowers traveled from all corners of the world to be part of the experience.
In terms of legacy, the 2000s cemented Amnesia’s sta- tus as a living legend. It was no longer just a club, it was a cultural landmark shaping the course of electronic music worldwide.
Amnesia has won the “Best Club in the World” award mul- tiple times from various industry institutions. This reinfor- ced its status as one of the cathedrals of electronic music.
