We recently lost a legend of longevity when Ms. Betty White passed. She was a woman of strength that taught us, entertained us, and gave us the gift of laughter for 99 wonderful years. She exemplified many things, but certainly modeled the ability to reorient her life when the winds of change blew. Betty White’s career spanned 8 decades, ranging from the stage to radio to television. She was seen on game shows, authored books and even did voice over work for animated films like SpongeBob Squarepants and Toy Story. She was resilient, determined and lived a life of great influence to the very end.
To say the least, I’m impressed by her longevity. Those that persevere and endure in the face of difficulties ... keep my attention! An ancient proverb tells us that “a good person falls seven times, and rises up again.” Life and aging inevitably have a way of knocking us down, but we always have a choice. We can choose to stay down or we can choose to rise again. When change comes (and it always does) we must choose to assess our situation, reorient ourselves and reengage. Betty White was masterful at this! She apparently was more of a fan of “reorienting” her life for the next adventure, than a proponent of “retiring” to the final chapter. At the ripe age of 63, she took on the challenge of one of her most memorable roles as a “Golden Girl.”
This daunting nemesis of change is known to strike a paralyzing fear in the heart of many. However, be assured that some develop the ability to press past the fear. Let’s be like them! All of us know the rate of change around us is unprecedented and life is arguably happening at a speed that we have never experienced. With that reality, we can focus on the terrifying problems that come with it or we can choose to see the fantastic possibilities that are now available to us! Let’s do that. Choose wisely.
