Rosie told of ‘copters to cakes’ switch
‘Cakes and Copters' was the intriguing title of this month’s talk to members of Clitheroe’s University of the Third Age. ' ItwasgivenbyCaptainRo-
sie Dummer, who was the first woman pilot to fly the Lynx helicopter. Rosie outlined her career in the army. After graduating from Sandhurst and serving a term in North ern Ireland she trained as an army aviator. Photographs were shown
of her standing on top of a Chipmunk plane prior to wing walking. She explained that only half of the entrants complete the tough course but she gained her wings after nine months and progressed to flying the Lynx anti-tank helicopter. She was awarded runner-
up in Cosmopolitan’s Woman of the Year and at the cere mony enjoyed meeting other women who had achieved suc cess including the winner, Helen Sharman, Britain’s first astronaut and Rebecca
Stephens, the first woman to climb Everest. Having left the army to
raise her family Rosie em barked on a second career as a cake artist and was soon suc cessful in this venture, win ning ‘Wedding Cake o f the Year’ awarded by Cake Mas ter’s Magazine. A recent speciality has
been making life-size figures, two o f which have been fea tured in The Clitheroe Adver tiser, including a Guardsman in his red tunic which was eat en and enjoyed by soldiers in that regiment. Rosie explained the dif
ficulties in making such a figure, which needs enough internal support to stand up right and to be transported to the venue. Asked about the transi
tion from military life to cake making, Rosie explained that it took on a life of its own. Her enthusiasm and game-for-an- ything attitude shone through this enjoyable presentation.
