Staff at Ribble Valley Borough Council enjoyed a taste of “fairfare”whentheauthority marked Fairtrade fortnight

with afood sampling session. During their lunchtime break, council workers sam pled a variety of Fairtrade food products, including chocolate and biscuits, and were treated to a Fairtrade cuppa.

The event, organised by the

Clitheroe Fairtrade Group, in cluded an exhibition of Fair trade products, a short film about two tea farmers in Ma lawi who have benefited from Fairtrade, and a prize draw for an Easter egg. The council’s principal

surveyor and Fairtrade en thusiast Tim Lynas said: “The

event aimed to raise aware ness about Fairtrade and col leagues were surprised by the wide range of Fairtrade prod ucts available, particularly from big brand names. “Swapping just one item a

week in your shopping basket to Fairtrade can make a signif icant difference to farmers in the developing world and we plan to hold a similar event in NovemberfeaturingFairtrade festive gifts.” Fairtrade campaigns for

fair prices and better work ing conditions for farming communities in developing countries. More than 1.4 mil- lion farmers producing a wide range of products, rang ing from bananas and coffee to soap and shampoo, have already benefited from the scheme.

Fairtrade also requires pro

ducers to uphold the rights of their workers, including safe working conditions.
