This year’s Ribchester Music Festival will be the last, a vic tim of rising costs and falling income, the organisers have announced.
At the launch event for the 23rd annual event at St Wil frid’s Church, chairman Tim Rainford said although it would be the biggest and most varied in recent years, with 16 events in eight dif ferent venues, it could not continue. He said financial pressures meant the festival directors were unwilling to commit to a 2016 Festival. “As anon-profit charitable
organisation we have relied on corporate and local gov ernment sponsorship, tick et sales, and donations from Friends of the Festival for the Festival to survive,” he said. “As both sponsorships and ticket sales have declined in
recent years, and the costs of staging the festival have in creased in spite of using tal ented student performers from the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Roy al Northern College of Music in Manchester, it means that, afterthisyeartheFestivalwill not be financially viable.” “Whilst we are saddened
by this decision, and it will be a disappointment to many of our loyal supporters, we feel we want to go out on a high and make this as memorable a festival as any that we have had in the previous 22 years, so we have put together an exciting array of events, with more music, more venues and more choice than ever before.” Over the last 23 years the
festival’s line-ups have in cluded great musicians such as Dame Evelyn Glennie, Ju lian Lloyd Webber, Pascal Roge, Humphrey Lyttleton andTasmin Little. For details of the 2015 fes tival, see The Valley section.
